Order Notacanthiformes(halosaurs and deep-sea spiny eels) Order 24-1

본 홈페이지가 기준으로 삼고 있는 분류 체계는 2006년에 출판된 J,S Nelson의 제4판 “Fishes of the World”이다.

Order Notacanthiformes(halosaurs and deep-sea spiny eels) Order 24-1

In the fourth edition of Nelson's Classification 2006, Order Albuliformes consisted of three families (Albulidae, Halosauridae, and Notacanthidae). In the 2016 5th edition of the Nelson Classification, two families(Halosauridae and Notacanthidae) were separated and promoted to the order(Order Notacanthiformes). The classification system this website uses as a standard is J,S Nelson's 4th edition “Fishes of the World” published in 2006. Although Nelson passed away, his team published the fifth edition of Nelson classification in 2016. Whenever the taxonomy is updated, all the serial numbers(orders and families) of taxa change. In the case of this homepage, accommodating the changed numbers is almost impossible because huge amount of documents are touched. So, for convenience, it is numbered, for example, “Order 24-1”, which means that it is a taxa branched from “Order 24”. Therefore, the taxon numbers on this website are not related to the scientific classification order, and simply mean the number for convenience only valid on this website.

The fishes of notacanthiforms formerly belonged to the order albuliforms, but unlike the species in albuliforms, their body shape resembles that of an eel, for instance, the caudal fin has disappeared. Fish of Notacanthiforms are found in oceans worldwide, at depths from 120 to 4,900 metres. They are elongated fish, although not as much so as the true eels. They typically feed on slow-moving or sessile animals, such as molluscs, echinoderms, and sea anemones. Like the true eels, they have a leptocephalus larva that floats in the surface waters before transforming into an adult. Unusually, the larva can often be larger than the adult.

Posteriorly directed spine on dorsal edge of rear of maxilla; premaxilla and maxilla bordering upper jaw; gill membranes separate; pectoral fins relatively high on body; pelvic fins abdominal, with 7-11 rays(the two fins are usually connected by a membrane); anal fin base long and merged with what remains of the caudal fin; caudal fin skeleton reduced or absent; tail easily regenerated when lost; branchiostegal rays 5-23; swim bladder present. Some have photophores.
