분포; 인도-서태평양/한국의 제주도 포함 남해, 일본 중부 이남, 타이완, 필리핀, 인도네시아, 서북 오스트렐리아, 인도양 북동부에 분포.
일반개요; 몸과 머리는 측편되었다. 평상시에는 위턱보다 아래턱이 길지만 산란기에는 암수 모두 아래턱보다 위턱이 길다. 주둥이 끝에서 눈을 관통하여 아가미뚜껑의 끝까지 폭이 넓은 흑갈색 수평 줄이 있고 눈 바로 위에도 제2등지느러미의 중간 부분까지 도달하는 검은 줄이 있다. 제1등지느러미와 제2등지느러미의 가시부 상단이 검다. 꼬리자루(미병부) 중앙 뒤끝에 검은 반점이 있다. 수심 3~100m 범위의 연안 암초지대에 무리지어 서식한다. 수컷이 구강포란하여 알을 부화시킨다. 7~9월에 짝짓기를 한다. 야행성이다.

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific/southern Korea including Jeju Island, south of central Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia and northwestern Australia, a new record for the northeastern Indian Ocean
General: Body and head compressed. Upper jaw tips of breeding pair protrude. Longitudinal stripe through eye reaching only posterior margin of opercle. Longitudinal stripe on dorsal half of body. Black spot on posterior center of caudal peduncle. Upper part of 1st dorsal fin and the spine part of 2nd dorsal fin dark. Form schools over rocky bottoms of 3~100m depth. Nocturnal species. Breeding from July to September. Mouth brooding by male.
