분포; 동남아시아/인도네시아 수마트라 섬 중동부, 말레이 반도 말레이시아의 라자 뮤사, 페라크, 트렝가누, 말레이시아 사라왁주(보르네오 섬)의 쿠칭.
일반개요; 초미니잉어(Paedocypris progenetica)는 초미니잉어과(Family Paedocyprididae/Tiny carps)로 분류하는 경우도 있다. 초미니잉어 속(genus Paedocypris)에는 3종이 있는데 이 3종을 다니오닌아과에서 따로 분리하여 초미니잉어과로 승격시킨 분류이다. 가장 작은 물고기로 1, 2위를 다투는 종에는 잉어과 다니오닌아과의 패도키프리스 프로게네티카(Paedocypris progenetica)와 파에도키프리스 미크로메게테스(Paedocypris micromegethes)가 있다. 두 종 모두 영명(일반명)이 없어서 전자는 필자가 “초미니잉어(Ultra smallest carp)”라고 가칭하였다. “초미니잉어(가칭)” 패도시프리스 프로게네티카(Paedocypris progenetica)는 인도네시아 수마트라 섬의 고유종이며 패도시프리스 미크로메게테스(Paedocypris micromegethes)는 말레이시아 고유종이다. 이탄 늪(peat swamps/泥炭濕地)과 흑수천(黑水川)에서 발견된다. 

초미니잉어는 세계에서 가장 작은 물고기로 알려져 있다. 암컷은 최대 10.3 mm, 수컷은 9.8 mm이다. 모든 척추동물 중에서 가장 작은 종으로 기록되어 있다가 2012년 1월에 7.7mm 크기의 초소형 개구리 패도프리네 아마우엔시스(Paedophryne amauensis)에게 1위 자리를 내놓았다. 가장 작은 물고기 기록은 다른 몇 종도 서열 다툼을 하고 있어서 순위가 절대적이지 않은 상황이다.

등지느러미는 1개이며 뒷지느러미는 2개이다. 수컷의 배지느러미 앞의 케라틴 단백질 패드가 꼭지처럼 튀어 나와 있는 모양이다. 아래턱에 나타나는 교배기 돌기(breeding tubercles)가 몰려있지 않고 일렬로 난다. 배지느러미가 없거나 흔적으로 남아 있다. 암컷은 앞 뒷지느러미에 주름이 있다. 복부의 작은 색소포들은 두껍게 밀집되어 하나의 패치인 것처럼 보인다. 모가지에서부터 항문까지 배 부분에 작고 검은 벌레무늬들이 있다.(수컷은 배지느러미의 케라틴 단백질 패드까지 포함). 등 꼭대기 중심선에 다수의 작은 색소포가 3-5열로 있어 이것이 넓은 줄 무늬로 나타나 있다.

Distribution; Southeast Asia/East-central Sumatra Island, Indonesia. Raja Musa, Perak, and Terengganu in Malay Peninsula Malaysia, and Kuching in Sarawak, Malaysia(Borneo Island).
General; Paedocypris progenetica(Ultra smallest carp) is sometimes classified into the Family Paedocyprididae(Tiny carps). There are three species in the genus Paedocypris, and these three species are separated from the Danionin subfamily and elevated to the family Paedocyprididae(Tiny carps). There are 2 smallest ultra mini bony fishes in the world; Paedocypris progenetica and Paedocypris micromegethes. They are species of cyprinid fish, Paedocypris progenetica endemic to Sumatra(Indonesia), Paedocypris micromegethes endemic to Malaysia. Found in peat swamps and blackwater streams.  Paedocypris progenetica is distinguished from Paedocypris micromegethes by: a smaller maximum size(male 9.8mm, versus 11.6; female 10.3mm, versus 11.4).

Paedocypris progenetica(Ultra smallest carp/temporary name) held the record for the smallest known vertebrate until the frog Paedophryne amauensis was formally described in January 2012. At 7.7 mm in length, it is considered the world's smallest known vertebrate. But there are some other species insisted first ranking of smallest fishes, this makes us confusing. 

Has one dorsal fin and 2 anal fins. Keratinized pad in front of male pelvic fins as a projecting knob, breeding tubercles on the dentary arranged in a straight row, without forming a cluster, pelvic fins of female vestigial, or often missing, presence of pre-anal-fin-fold in female, dense small chromatophores in deep layer on abdomen appearing as a continuous patch, tiny black vermiculations on belly from throat to anus, including on male's pre-pelvic keratinized knob, numerous small, contiguous chromatophores on middorsal line, organized in 3-5 rows, forming a broad stripe, pelvic-fin rays plain brown.
