분포; 동대서양/지브롤터 해협에서 북위 15°N까지, 마데이라와 카나리아제도 포함. 지중해, 브리티시 제도. 서대서양/미국 뉴욕, 멕시코 만, 아르헨티나, 카리브해 포함.
일반개요; 유럽 참돔으로 번역된다. 전체적으로 핑크 빛이 도는 은색이며 몸의 거의 반에 해당하는 등쪽 부분의 비늘들 각각에 희미한 노랑색 점이 찍혀있으며 이것들이 노란 색 가로 줄무늬처럼 보인다. 두 눈 사이와 주둥이, 윗 입술이 노랗다. 등지느러미, 꼬리지느러미, 가슴지느러미가 핑크 색이다. 바위와 돌밭 또는 모래밭에서 발견되며 대륙붕 경사면 150~250m 수심에서도 발견된다. 유어들은 해초밭에서 발견된다. 갑각류, 물고기, 연체동물을 먹는다. 암컷이 수컷으로 변하는 자성 선숙(雌性先熟; protogyny)의 암수한몸 형이다. 3년 성장 후 24cm 정도 되었을 때 성적으로 성어가 된다.

Distribution; Eastern Atlantic/Strait of Gibraltar to 15°N (rare southward 20°N), including Madeira and the Canary Islands; Mediterranean and northward to the British Isles. Western Atlantic: New York, USA and northern Gulf of Mexico to Argentina, including the continental coast of the Caribbean Sea.
General; Pinkish silver with an indistinct yellow spot on each scale on about upper half of body, these spots giving a yellow-striped effect; a wedge of yellow across interorbital and some yellow on snout and upper lip; dorsal, caudal and pectoral fins pink Found over rock, rubble, or sand bottoms and the continental shelf down to about 250 m depth, often above 150 m. Young frequently found on seagrass beds. Feeds on crustaceans, fishes, and mollusks. Marketed fresh and frozen. Protogynous hermaphrodite species. First sexual maturity occurs at 3 years of age (about 24 cm), first behaving as females and then as males.
