분포; 인도•서태평양/한국의 남해와 제주도, 일본 남부, 타이완, 동중국해에 분포.
일반개요; 머리와 몸은 측편되었고 긴 방추형이다. 등지느러미의 극조부와 연조부 사이는 높이 차이가 별로 없이 막으로 연결되었다. 동공의 아래 경계는 주둥이 끝보다 밑에 있다. 몸의 바탕색은 회색이며 3개의 갈색 수평 띠무늬가 있으며 완전 성어는 띠무늬가 거의 보이지 않는다. 머리의 등쪽과 몸의 앞쪽에 있는 지느러미 부분들은 노란색을 띤다. 꼬리지느러미는 검다. 바위 지대에 서식하며 계절에 따라 같은 해역에서 얕은 수심으로 이동한다. 유어는 동물성 플랑크톤, 성어는 갑각류와 작은 물고기를 먹는다. 무리를 짓는다. 노성어는 단독생활을 한다. 일본 양식업에서는 치어를 생산해 방류한다.

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific/South Sea and Jeju Island of Korea, southern Japan, Taiwan and East China Sea.
General: Body and head compressed. Body spindle shaped. Spine and soft ray parts of dorsal fin continuous without knotch by membrane. Grey in body color with 3 broad dark lateral lines. Dark lateral lines almost invisible in old adults. Upper part of head yellowish. Fins anteriorly posited yellowish. Caudal fin dark. Lower margin of eye below snout tip. Inhabit rocky shores, seasonal offshore-inshore migrations in limited areas. Young specimens form schools and old adults solitary. Juveniles feed on zooplankton, adults feed on crustaceans and small fishes. Cultured and released for fishery in Japan.
