분포; 인도•서태평양/한국의 남해, 일본 남부, 오스트렐리아, 동아프리카 포함한 인도•서태평양에 분포.
일반개요; 몸과 머리가 심하게 측편되었고 체고가 높은 마름모꼴로서 병어(pomfret)를 닮았다. 등지느러미와 뒷지느러미의 모양이 대칭적이다. 제1등지느러미의 가시들은 피부 속에 묻혀 보이지 않으므로 등지느러미는 1개이다. 뒷지느러미의 분리 극조(가시)도 피부에 묻혀 있다. 미병부 측선 후단에 잘 발달되지 않은 모비늘이 있으며 크기가 작고 보통 8~11개 밖에 없다. 배지느러미는 유어기에 있다가 9cm 이상 크면 없어진다. 신선한 개체의 사진이 없어서 전문서적 마다 색상에 관한 기술이 다르다. 전체적으로 암갈색 또는 황갈색이라는 설명이 있는가하면 ‘등쪽은 청색이 섞인 황갈색, 배쪽은 은백색이며 모든 지느러미들은 노란색을 띠며 다만 등지느러미와 뒷지느러미의 앞부분은 회청색이다’라는 기술도 있다. 15~105m 수심의 모래, 개펄 지역에 서식하며 야간에는 수면층에 나타난다. 수면에 떴을 때는 옆으로 누워 헤엄친다. 보통 큰 무리를 짓는다. 동물플랑크톤을 먹는다. 좋은 식용어로 취급한다.

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific/southern Korea, southern Japan to Western Pacific and Indian Ocean including Australia and East Africa.
General: Body and head compressed, deep body depth, profile similar to members of Pampus. Equal-shaped dorsal and anal fin. Spinous portions of dorsal and anal fin embedded in skin, not seen. Pelvic fin absent, but present in juveniles under 9cm. Lateral line ends in weakly-developed scutes on the caudal peduncle. Fresh or live specimen photo unavailable, diffrent color descriptions found in a few fish books. Inhabits coastal areas with muddy substrate in 15~105m depth. Near the surface at night, swims on its side near the surface. Normally forms large schools. Feed on zooplankton. Excellent food fish.
