Distribution; Indo-Pacific/South Sea of Korea, Pacific coast south of central Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Philippine Sea, Sulawesi Sea, India's Bay of Bengal, Sri Lanka, Red Sea, Persian Gulf, Seychelles, Mozambique, South Africa, Mauritius, Southern Madagascar, Northwest Australia and Queensland, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Samoa and Tahiti. Eastern Pacific/Gulf of Panama, Mexico, Galapagos, Colombia, Ecuador. Western Atlantic/Massachusetts, USA south to the Florida Peninsula, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, Brazil. Eastern Atlantic/African Guinea to Algola in the south.
General; If Sailfin flyingfish classify in terms of “two-winged flying fish” and “four-winged flying fish,” it fall under “two-winged flying fish.” The four-winged flying fish has large pectoral fins and pelvic fins, so it looks like a four-winged airplane when gliding, and the two-winged flying fish has small ventral fins and only pectoral fins large, so it looks like a two-winged airplane when gliding.

Body elongated, slightly compressed laterally and cross section is broadly cylindrical. The sailfin flying fish is stocky as far as flying fish are concerned. Head short, snout short and blunt. Mouth small, mouth open at the front. Upper and lower jaws are approximately equal in length, upper jaw protrusible. Both jaws with small conical teeth, palatine bone also has teeth. Two pairs of nostrils, large in shape, close to the eyes. Gill slit wide, gill membrane free in throat isthmus. The swim bladder is large and extends backward. Intestine is simple, without pylorus and caecum. Body covered with round scales that is large, thin, smooth, easy to fall off; head more or less scaled. Lateral line located near ventral profile of body with a branch to origin of pectoral fin base on chest. Females of the species are usually slightly longer and heavier than the males. Juveniles have a pair of short black whiskers(easily lost)..

It has comparatively small pectoral fins and a long large dorsal fin relative to other flying fish. The rear end of pectoral fin not past the posterior end of anal fin base, 1st ray unbranched, the rest rays branched. Anal fin origin below the dorsal fin origin. The dorsal fin has no spines, located at the far back of the body. The dorsal fin is tall and large, with its tip reaching slightly behind the base of the caudal fin. The pelvic fin is short, located in the center of the body, and its end barely reaching anal origin. Caudal fin is well developed, deeply forked with a longer lower lobe.

It displays countershading. Body iridescent greenish blue dorsally, silvery white ventrally. Pectoral fins uniformly transparent and colorless. The dorsal fin is black in upper part for over about half and the rest base part is light colored. When fresh, in case of male, the anterior margin of pelvic fin, upper and lower margin of caudal fin with purple-red or red orange color. The Korean name “Hwang-nal-chi” is equivalent to “Yellow flyingfish”, the name may have come from a discolored dead male individual.

Ocean migratory fish species, living in the surface water layer of offshore or shallow waters, occasionally swimming in open waters. Capable of leaping out of the water and gliding for considerable distances above the surface. During the spawning season, at least 3-4 individuals gather to form a group, and when the maximum number of individuals gather, they form a group of up to 1 million individuals. For groups of at least 3-4, the ratio is 1 female to 3 males. Even in very large groups, the ratio of males to females remains the same at 1:3. There are two spawning periods during the year, one from September to January, and one from March to August.

Spawning on surface substrate(e.g. flotsam) when present is the usual reproductive mode but other modes may be employed if this substrate is not available. The fertilised eggs may remain suspended in the water surface during its development with the help of the small filaments on the egg surface and the adhesive filaments holding the egg mass together, by increasing the surface to volume ratio of the eggs, which aids in propping the eggs up in the water column. The eggs may also be suspended upon current or become benthic.

Like most other flying fish, the sailfin flying fish feeds primarily on zooplankton. It has also been found to eat fish scales and Sargassum, and is thought to be a generalist. It plays an important ecological role as a prey species for larger predators. Some organisms known to predate on the sailfin flying fish are large fish, dolphinfish in particular, large squids, and seabirds.

P. brachypterus is generally considered bycatch by the commercial fishing industry. It can be caught by fishing methods such as drift nets or fixed nets, or woven straw mats to collect flying fish eggs. Not important as food fish. however, like other flying fishes, Adult fish are suitable for braised or soup, and can also be dried and eaten; fish roe can be used for salting, which has a good flavor.

※In the photo on the left, the large dorsal fin is tilted to the right, making it look like the right pelvic fin. In another photo of many flyingfishes rising above the water at the same time, there is a mix of individuals with dorsal fin tilted to the left and those tilted to the right. If guessing, it might be adjusting the dorsal fin to change direction or compensate for the lack of lift of the undersized pelvic fin. Could this be the reason why the dorsal fin is exceptionally large compared to other flying fishes?
