분포; 서태평양, 중부태평양: 한국의 제주도, 일본 남부, 서태평양, 오스트렐리아 서부, 통가, 뉴칼레도니아, 뉴질랜드에 분포.
일반개요; 열대보다는 아열대 해역에 더 많다. 등쪽은 적색, 배쪽은 연한 적색이며 백색 줄무늬와 병행하는 두개의 갈색 줄무늬가 있는데 위의 것은 주둥이에서부터 눈을 지나 제2등지느러미 후반부까지 이어지고 미병부 상단 앞쪽에 있는 거의 흰 노란 반점과 만난다. 아래 줄 무늬는 뺨을 지나 체측 중심부에서부터 색이 옅어진다. 미병부 중간 상단에 큰 검은 반점이 있다. 수심 30m 정도의 모래 바닥 쪽에 많으며 단독 생활을 하고 낮에는 바닥에서 쉬다가 야간에 활동한다.

Distribution: Western and central Pacific: Jeju Island in southern Korea, southern Japan, western Pacific, western Australia, New Caledonia, Tonga, and New Zealand.
General: Brownish red dorsally, red ventrally, with 2 oblique, dark brown stripes bordered broadly by white from front of snout to a large yellowish white spot anteriorly on upper half of caudal peduncle. Upper stripe passing through eye, the lower across cheek to middle of body, both broadening and progressively less pigmented posteriorly. A large black spot on upper half of caudal peduncle. More common in subtropical than in tropical waters. Solitary, rest on bottom most of day, active at night. Sand areas and reefs to 30m depth.
