분포; 인도•태평양/[파루페네우스 트리파스키아투수 복잡계(Parupeneus trifasciatus complex)]를 구성하는 3종 중 한 종이다. 이 “복잡계/complex”는 동인도양과 서태평양에서 분포 위치가 약간씩 다르면서 각자의 이름으로 불리고 있는 Parupeneus trifasciatus와 Parupeneus crassilabris 및 Parupeneus insularis 3종으로 구성되어 있다. 복잡계(complex)라는 것은 외관상 서로의 차이를 구분하기가 매우 어려운 종들의 집단을 말하며 서로 다른 종일 수도 있고 같은 종인데 분포 해역에 따라 종명이 다르게 호칭되는 경우들일 수 있는 것들을 말한다. .
일반개요; 몸색을 빠른 속도로 변경시키는데 거의 백색에서부터 노란 색조, 또는 적색 조, 청색 조의 혼합 등으로 다변적이다. 눈 주변이 검회색이거나 흑색이며 두 등지느러미의 아래 몸에 넓은 흑색 반점이 있으며 이 반점은 가슴지느러미까지만 내려오기도 하고 복부 쪽으로 길게 연장되어 긴 모양이 되기도 한다. 단독 생활을 하며 가끔 무리를 이룰 때도 있다. 산호초 주변 바닥 쪽에 살며 무척추동물과 작은 물고기를 먹는다. 서식 수심은 1~80m.

Distribution: Included in the Parupeneus trifasciatus complex are: Parupeneus trifasciatus from the Indian Ocean: Parupeneus crassilabris from the western and central Pacific: and Parupeneus insularis from the more eastern islands of Oceania.
General: White to purple or yellow with orange spots on scale. Have the ability to rapidly change colors. Black patch around eye, pair of large black bars or spots, one below each dorsal fin. Black bars extending past, or not past the pectoral fin. Solitary, occasionally schooling species. Coastal, lagoon and outer reefs to 80m. Feeds on invertebrates and fishes.
