Order Perciformes(perch-likes) Family Haemulidae(grunts)
Harlequin sweetlips
Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides(Lacepède,1801). 72cm(TL)
Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: Mauritius, Maldives, Cocos Island, Tonga, from Ryukyu Islands to Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia.
General: Deeper body compared to most others in the genus. Dorsal fin deeply notched. Caudal fin of juveniles rounded and narrowly forked, of adults slightly forked. Juveniles brown with 7 very large, dark edged white spots on head and body, caudal fin white with a large brown spot in each lobe. With growth, this pattern is obliterated by the formation of small black or blackish brown spots on head, body, and median fins, abruptly uniform light grey ventral to level of pectoral fins. Small juveniles swim by rapid exaggerated undulating movements, but with little progression, suggesting mimicking a toxic flatworm or nudibranch. Inhabits coral reefs. Adults solitary or in small groups, near and under ledges or caves by day. Feeds on crustaceans, mollusks, and fishes at night.
