분포; 서태평양/한국의 남해, 일본 남부에서부터, 오스트렐리아 동북부와 서부, 동쪽으로 캐롤린 제도와 피지 및 통가에 분포.
일반개요; 살아있을 때 몸의 바탕색은 적색일수도 있고 녹색일수도 있으며 청색점들이 복부와 배지느러미 가슴지느러미를 제외한 나머지 전체에 산재한다. 어렸을 때는 청색점들이 크고 수가 적으며 성장하면서 점들이 작아지고 많아진다. 본 속(Plectropomus) 중에서 유일하게 눈 둘레에 뚜렷한 청색 원을 가지고 있다. 꼬리지느러미 가장자리가 중심부 위주로 백색을 띤다. 전새개골 하부에 3~4개의 가시뼈가 있다. 종렬비늘 수 112~127개, 측선공비늘 수는 81~99개이다. 3~100m 수심의 산호초에 살며 밤에는 틈 속에 은신해 있다. 성어는 물고기를 주식하고 유어기에는 갑각류와 오징어같은 무척추동물도 곁들여 먹는다. 태어날 때는 암수한몸이다(protogynous hermaphrodite). 알은 중층에 산란하며 유생은 부유생활을 한다. Spotted coralgrouper(Plectropomus maculatus)와 혼동되는 종이다. 가두리 양식되고 있는 종이다. 최장 26년 수명을 가진다.

Distribution: Southern Korea, southern Japan to Australia(Queensland and western Australia), eastward to Caroline Islands, Fiji and Tonga.
General: Ground color in life redish or olivaceous, paler ventrally with numerous minute round blue spots on head, body, pectoral fin base, dorsal and caudal fins, absent on lower thorax and abdomen. A complete blue ring around eyes. Caudal fin with a white line usually visible along middle of rear edge of the fin. Lower edge of preopercle with 3~4 antrose spines ventrally. Inhabit coral reefs. Inactive at night, hiding under ledges. Adults feed mainly on fish. Juveniles feed on small fish and invertebrates such as crustaceans and squids. A protogynous hermaphrodite. Eggs float just below the surface. Larvae are pelagic. Cage cultured. Max age 26 years. Depth range 3~100m depth.
