농어목 바리과 Order Perciformes Family Serranidae(sea basses, groupers, fairy basslets)

서태평양: 말레이 반도, 인도네시아, 솔로몬 제도, 파푸아뉴기니, 오스트렐리아 중부 이북, 아라푸라 해,
일반개요; 적색에서 녹색 또는 갈색까지 바탕색의 변화가 심하다. 등지느러미, 꼬리지느러미, 뒷지느러미를 포함해 푸른점이 몸에 산재한다. 점들은 머리 쪽으로 갈수록 길쭉하며 유사 종 무늬바리(Plectropomus leopardus)에 비하여 점들의 크기가 크고 간격이 넓다. 나이가 들수록 점이 작아지고 많아진다. 꼬리지느러미 뒤 가장자리가 푸른색을 띤 흰색이다. 눈 둘레에 푸른 원이 있다. 연안의 조용한 산호암초에 많으며(5~50m 수심) 맑은 외해 쪽 암초에는 없다. 알은 수면 바로 아래에서 떠다닌다. 물고기를 먹으며 유어는 무척추동물도 곁들여 먹는다. 식용으로 인기가 있다. 시구아테라 독이 있을 수 있다.

Distribution: Malaysian Peninsula, Indonesia, Arafura Sea, Papua New Guinea, north of central Australia.
General: Often misidentified as Plectropomus leopardus. Highly variable ground color from red, to olive, dark brown or pale gray. With numerous blue spots on body and fins: elongate blue spots on head and anterior body. Bluish white margin on tail. Blue ring around eyes. Solitary. Silty coastal reefs in 5~50m, but absent in clear offshore reefs. Eggs float just below the water surface. Feeds on fishes, juveniles also feed on invertebrates such as crustaceans and squids. Its flesh is well appreciated. Reports of ciguatera poisoning.
