농어목 육돈바리과 Order Perciformes Family Plesiopidae(roundheads)

분포; 인도•태평양: 한국의 남해, 일본 남부, 서태평양, 인도양(홍해 포함 동아프리카까지)에 분포.
일반개요; 등지느러미 극조부의 각 기조 사이의 막은 깊게 패어 쐐기 홈을 이루고 마지막 극조와 연조 사이는 패이지 아니하였다. 극조부의 상부는 오렌지색이며 그 밑으로 흰색, 그 다음 밑으로 흑색 선 무늬가 수평으로 있으며 다시 그 아래에 청색 줄무늬가 등지느러미 거의 전체에 걸쳐 있다. 뒷지느러미에도 희미한 청색 줄무늬 한 개가 수평방향으로 지나간다. 체색은 대개의 경우 흑갈색이지만 그 농도는 거의 새까만 색에서부터 밝은 갈색까지 변이가 심하다. 측선은 불완전하다. 눈 뒤 가장자리에 검은 2~3개의 검은 점이 있으나 체색이 아주 검을 때는 보이지 않는다. 수심 1~23m의 연안 암초지역, 산호 주변에 서식하며 낮에는 돌멩이 틈 속에 숨어 보이지 않다가 밤에 나와서 갑각류, 작은 물고기, 복족류를 잡아 먹는다.

Distribution: Indo-Pacific: southern Korea, southern Japan, West Pacific, Indian Ocean including Red Sea and East Africa.
General: Color variable, Body generally blackish brown, varies from black to medium light brown. Dorsal spines orange distally, a white, a black and a bluish stripes along basal part of dorsal fin. An indistinctive bluish line along the anal fin. Dorsal spine rays deeply notched, except the last ray. Sometimes 2 or 3 black spots behind eye. Lateral line incomplete. Depth range 1~23m. Common but very secretive and usually found when turning rubble pieces in pools. Ventures out in the open at night to feed on small crustaceans, fishes and gastropods.
