Distribution; Northwest Pacific/East Sea of the Korean Peninsula(Go-seong, Sok-cho, Yang-yang, Ju-mun-jin, Gang-neung, Yeong-deok, Cheog-jin(N.Korea), and Seong-jin(N.Korea). Geoje Island in the southern sea of the Korean Peninsula, Nam-po city(North Korea) in northern Yellow Sea(includes Bohai Bay and eastern Shandong Peninsula of China). Primorsky Krai, Sea of Okhotsk, Sakhalin Island, Kamchatka Peninsula, and Kuril Islands of Russia. Hokkaido, northeastern Honshu, the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture, and Tsushima in Japan.

※ The Okhotsk atka mackerel(Pleurogrammus azonus) and the Atka mackerel(Pleurogrammus monopterygius) were previously considered the same species, but have since been reclassified as separate species. The Okhotsk atka mackerel is primarily distributed in the northern Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the Kuril Islands area, while the Atka mackerel is widely distributed primarily in the eastern North Pacific, the Aleutian Islands(including Atoka Island), and the Gulf of Alaska.

General; Its body length is usually 45-50 cm, and its shape is similar to that of the Fat greenling(Hexagrammos otakii), but its caudal peduncle is thinner and its head is smaller. The head and body are slightly flattened laterally and have an overall streamlined shape. The anterior lengths of the upper and lower jaws are equal. The posterior end of the upper jaw does not reach the anterior margin of the eye, or barely reaches it. There is no cortical process on the head. Strongly developed ridges are developed on the upper surface of the skull. There are teeth on the jaws and vomer, but not on the palatine bone. The head and body are covered with ctenoid scales.

The dorsal fin margin is straight, and the spinous and soft rays are connected without notches, or if notches are present, they are minimal. The dorsal fin originates above the posterior end of the gill cover. The caudal fin is regular, with a deeply notched medial margin. The base of the dorsal fin spinous rays is slightly shorter than that of the soft rays, and the heights of the two rays are similar. The origin of the soft rays of the dorsal fin is at the same position as that of the anal fin. The anal fin margin is almost straight. The posterior tip of the anal fin base is at the same position as the posterior tip of the dorsal fin base. The pectoral fin is positioned lower side of the body and slightly anterior to the origin of the dorsal fin. The margin of the pectoral fin rounded, and posterior tip located well before the anus(cloaca). The pelvic fin positioned posterior to the origin of the pectoral fin, and its’ posterior tip do not extend beyond the posterior tip of the pectoral fin.

Has five lateral lines. The first lateral line begins in front of the dorsal fin base, runs parallel to the dorsal line just below the back, and reaches the top of the caudal fin base. The second lateral line begins above the gill cover and curves briefly dorsally, paralleling the first lateral line and arriving the center of the caudal fin base. The third lateral line begins in the center of the pectoral fin on the lower part of the body, approaches the lower part of the caudal fin base, and ends. The fourth lateral line begins below the base of the pectoral fin and ends slightly past the base of the anal fin. The fifth lateral line begins on the ventral side of the pelvic fin base, passes the base of the anal fin, and reaches the lower base of the caudal fin.

The upper body is dark gray-brown, the middle of the body is grayish yellow, and the lower body is milky white. The upper part of the head is gray-brown, and the gill covers and the ventral side of the head are milky white. There are about 10 dark vertical stripes(transverse stripes; when the fish is held upright) of irregular shape and size on body side from the head to the caudal peduncle. These stripes may be distinct and clearly visible in black-brown, or they may look like faint cloud patterns. There are 5 to 6 blackish spots evenly spaced across the dorsal fin. All fins follow the background color of the body. The Atka mackerel(Pleurogrammus monopterygius) has a yellow background and six distinct blackish bands along the body side, making it distinctly different from the Okhotsk atka mackerel.

It inhabits coastal waters from the surface to depths of 240 meters. Young Okhotsk atka mackerel swim in schools near the surface, and after about one year of growth, when they become adults, they descend to the bottom and lead a benthic life. The breeding season runs from September to February of the following year. Females lay clutches of eggs among pebbles or rocks on reefs within 20 meters of the surface, and the male guards the nest until the eggs hatch.

It is a major commercial fish species. It is known for having thick skin that is delicious when grilled, but conversely, the flesh itself is considered less flavorful. In the past, when only Okhotsk atka mackerel caught in Korean coastal waters were eaten, they weren't necessarily considered delicious, but had moderate reputation. However, as large quantities of frozen short-period Atka mackerel from Russia were imported and confused with the Korean product, the fish came to be regarded as a tasteless one.

Does It Have a Swim Bladder or Not?
Descriptions of the family Hexagrammidae generally state that fishes in this family lack a swim bladder. However, among the nine species in three genera of Hexagrammidae, there is a claim concerning the two species of the genus Pleurogrammus, the Okhotsk atka mackerel (Pleurogrammus azonus) and the Atka mackerel (Pleurogrammus monopterygius), that appears to contradict this view. According to this account, the swim bladder of Hexagrammos agrammus and Hexagrammos otakii degenerates as they grow from larvae into adults, and they consequently adopt a bottom-dwelling lifestyle. In contrast, Pleurogrammus azonus and Pleurogrammus monopterygius are said to retain their swim bladders throughout their lives, enabling them to swim actively above the seafloor, in the middle and upper parts of the water column, and even near the surface. This claim conflicts with the generally accepted view that members of Hexagrammidae lack a swim bladder. As of 2026, there appears to be no way to verify the matter conclusively.

※ [Origins of scientific and English names]
The scientific name for the Okhotsk Atka mackerel(Pleurogrammus azonus) was identified in 1913 by American ichthyologists David Starr Jordan and Charles William Metz, based on a specimen collected in Nampo, North Korea. English common name is "Okhotsk Atka mackerel". Calling it as a “mackerel” is a misnomer, as im-yeon-su-eo(임연수어) is not closely related to the mackerels at all. Originally, im-yeon-su-eo was believed to be the same species as the Atka mackerel(English(scientific name: Pleurogrammus monopterygius), whose main fishing grounds were around Atka Island in the southern Aleutian Islands of Alaska. This is why it acquired the English common name “Atka mackerel.” It was later discovered that another species had been included under the same name, and that species was given the new scientific name Pleurogrammus azonus. This is the species known as im-yeon-su-eo(임연수어) in Korea. Although Pleurogrammus azonus occurs in both regions, it is found predominantly in the Sea of Okhotsk rather than around Alaska. Among the two species in the genus Pleurogrammus, the English common name “Atka mackerel” had already become established for the species that was named first. When P. azonus, whose distribution is centered in the Sea of Okhotsk, was subsequently recognized as a distinct species, “Okhotsk” was added to the already established name, giving it the English common name Okhotsk Atka mackerel. In other words, should “Okhotsk Atka mackerel” be understood as referring to a species occurring in both the Sea of Okhotsk and the Atka region? Another English common name for the species is Arabesque greenling.
