분포; 인도•태평양: 한국의 남해, 일본 남부, 서태평양, 아프리카 남부 포함, 인도양, 오스트렐리아, 프렌치 폴리네시아에 분포.
일반개요; 몸과 머리는 측편되었고 입이 위로 열린다. 눈 지름은 주둥이 길이보다 길다. 꼬리지느러미 뒤 가장자리가 초승달처럼 안으로 패였다. 등지느러미 기조들의 막이 밑으로 패이지 않았다. 몸 색은 적색과 은백색 사이에서 변화가 심하다. 약 6개의 수직 적색 무늬는 반점 형태로 나타날 때도 있다. 색상과 무늬의 변경 속도는 매우 빠르다. 지느러미들의 후단과 기조들의 막이 검다. 수심 8~80m의 암초나 산호초에 서식한다. 소수의 무리를 짓는다. 작은 물고기, 갑각류, 기타 무척추동물을 잡아 먹는다.

Distribution: Indo-Pacific: southern Korea, southern Japan, Western Pacific, Australia, French Polynesia, Indian Ocean including Red Sea and southern Africa.
General: Body and head compressed. Mouth oblique with the lower jaw projecting upwards. Eye diameter longer than snout. Caudal fin strongly emarginate with slightly elongate tips. Dorsal fin not notched. Variable red to silvery occasionally with about 6 red bars or large spots. Have ability to rapidly intensify or diminish color and markings. Fins except pelvic dusky red with blackish margins. Found on outer reef slopes and lagoon pinnacles from 8 to at least 80m depths. In small aggregations. Feeds on small fish, crustaceans and other invertebrates.
