분포; 서태평양: 한국의 남해, 일본 남부, 남중국해, 인도네시아, 오스트렐리아 북부에 분포한다.
일반개요; 머리와 몸은 측편되었고 항문(뒷지느러미와 배지느러미 사이) 위치에서 체고가 가장 높으나 머리 뒤에서부터 등지느러미 연조부 중반까지 체고가 비슷하다. 체고는 연조부에서 미약한 경사를 이루며 좁아지다가 미병부에서 급하게 좁아진다. 눈이 크고 입은 위를 향해 열린다. 전새개골 가장자리에 톱니 모양의 돌기들이 있다. 살아있을 때 등지느러미, 배지느러미 및 뒷지느러미에 다수의 둥근 점들이 산재하며 이 점들은 노란색이며 어두운 적갈색 또는 분홍빛일 때도 있다. 죽은 개체는 점들이 희미한 검은색으로 변한다. 수심 20m 이내에서부터 400m까지의 암초지대 바닥 근처에서 서식하며 무리를 이룬다. 남중국해와 안다만 해(Andaman Sea)에 매우 풍부하다. 식용어이다. 소리를 낸다.

Distribution: Southern Korea, southern Japan, South China Sea, Indonesia, and northern Australia.
General: Body and head compressed. Moderately deep body, deepest near anus(in front of anal fin). Body tapers very slightly to beneath the middle of soft portion of the dorsal fin, and then abruptly to the peduncle. Many yellow spots on dorsal, anal and pelvic fins in live state, the spots also can be dark red or pinkish, turn faint dark in spirits. Occurs in inshore and offshore reefs less than 20m to more than 400m depths. Forms aggregations in open bottom areas, abundant in South China Sea and Andaman Sea. Food fish. Sound production has been studied.e
