분포/서태평양과 동태평양: 일본, 타이완, 팔라우, 오스트렐리아, 뉴질랜드, 하와이, 캘리포니아만, 코스타리카에서 칠레까지 분포한다.
일반개요/피부는 가시로 덮여있으며 가시들은 균등하게 분포되어 있다. 가시의 크기는 가시나무상어의 가시보다 작다. 가시의 밑둥 판의 지름은 약 4mm이며 밑판들은 모두 독립되어 있다. 주둥이는 짧은 편이며 몸은 육중하다. 등지느러미 두 개는 크기가 작고 서로 가깝게 위치하며 몸체의 뒷쪽에 몰려 있다. 뒷지느러미는 없다. 분수공은 작고 코주름은 짧다. 동작이 굼뜬 큰 상어이며 10~1000m 수심의 바닥쪽에서 산다. 상어를 포함한 물고기, 두족류를 먹는다. 난태생이며 한 배에 114마리 까지의 새끼를 낳는다. ※ prickle: 가시

Distribution: Western and Eastern Pacific: Japan, Taiwan, Palau, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Gulf of California, from Costa Rica to Chile.
General: Has thorn-like denticles on body which are moderately large, numerous, regularly distributed, The bases never fused into compound. Grayish brown in color, with black distal fin margins. Relatively short snout and stout body, two small spineless dorsal fins, close together, towards posterior part of body. No anal fin, no subterminal notch on caudal fin small spiracles, short labial furrows. A large sluggish shark, inhabiting bottoms in 10~1000m depths. Feeds on other sharks, bony fishes and cephalopods. Ovoviviparous, with up to 114 pups in a litter.
