분포; 인도•서태평양/한국의 서해와 서남해, 일본, 중국, 서태평양, 오스트렐리아 북부, 인도, 페르시아 만 서부에 분포.
일반개요; 꼬마 민어라는 한국명의 뜻과는 달리 대형어이다. 한국명 작명이 잘못되었다. 전체적으로 회색이면서 검다. 젊은 개체는 4~5개의 뚜렷하지 않은 너비가 넓은 수직 띠무늬가 있으며 등지느러미와 꼬리지느러미 그리고 등쪽에 검은 점들이 있다. 가슴지느러미와 배지느러미가 검다. 개펄의 연안 해역에 살며 하구와 기수에도 들어간다. 작은 물고기와 갑각류를 주식한다.

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific/Western and southwestern waters in Korea, Japan, China, western Pacific, northern Australia, India, western coast of the Persian Gulf.
General: Distinguished by large size and overall grey to blackish colour. Young fish have black spots on back, dorsal fin and caudal fin. Indistinct 4~5 broad and dark bands in young fish. Pectoral and pelvin fins blackish in young specimens. Found in coastal waters over muddy bottoms, off the sea-bed. Ascend tidal rivers and estuaries. Feed on crustaceans and small fishes.
