Lateral view of Luna lion fish(Pterois lunulata) |
Oder Scorpaeniformes Family Scorpaenidae(Scorpionfishes or rockfishes) Distribution; Indo-Pacific/South eastern sea and South Sea of Korea including Jeju Island, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Viet Nam, Australia, New Caledonia, Mauritius(eastern Africa). The mouth is large, both jaws are equal in length, flat-shaped protrusions on the lower part of the lower jaw. Villi-shaped teeth on both jaws and vomer and no teeth on the palatine bone. The posterior end of the upper jaw does not reach the center of the eye. The dorsal and pectoral fins are long. The dorsal fin origin is slightly in front of the posterior margin of the gill cover. The dorsal spine membranes are deeply indented. The base of the dorsal fin spine has developed venom gland. The soft part of the dorsal fin begins slightly in front of the origin of the anal fin. The pectoral fin is large and beautiful, like the wing feathers of peacock. The pectoral fin of juveniles reach the posterior margin of caudal fin. The pectoral fin rays are not branched and the fin membrane is deeply incised. The posterior end of the pelvic fin far exceeds the anal fin origin. The margin of caudal fin is rounded. Lateral line is distinct and rounded, paralleling the outline of the dorsum. Number of scale is 60–80 along the body from behind the gills to the base of the tail. Scales above the lateral line with 7–10. The body and head are white in ground color, with occasional very faint reddish hue indistinctly visible on upper body. The head and body with many closely spaced blackish or reddish stripes running vertically. The inner scales of the darker and wider of these stripes(the principal dark bands) are white in the center, giving the entire stripe a net-like appearance. The stripes on body is about 20 and 10 stripes on the head and the width of each stripe is varying. The stripes on the head are narrower than the pupil and radiating from the eye. Among the stripes on the head, three black stripes are standing out. one of which starts from the dorso-head just in front of the eyeball and runs diagonally down to the middle of the upper jaw, and another runs vertically through the eye to the bottom of the head. The third starts from the dorso-back just behind the eye, brushes the posterior margin of the eye, and then curves diagonally to the right, down to the edge of the gill cover. Another one of wider and darker stripes on the head is in midway between the eyeball and the origin of the dorsal fin, and this stripe does not belong to the group of radial stripes centered on the eye. The space between the gill cover margin and the base of the pectoral fin is either devoid of any markings, or is minimal and traceable. There are no markings on the ventral side of the head and the chest. The pectoral fins are sometimes very light pale red and sometimes very light greyish-brown. Each rays have 3 to 9 blackish-brown bands arranged evenly across the fin. When the pectoral fins are moderately spread out, these dark bands appear to be interconnected, creating a wave pattern(or continuous V-shape depending on your view). The pelvic fin also light red with 5 to 7 dark spots spaced evenly across the fins, which can look like lines across the entire fin. The soft part of the dorsal fin, the anal fin, and the caudal fin have no dark spots at all, or very few if any(in large adults). It inhabits warm waters of shallow, reef-bottomed coastal waters. Feed on fish and crustaceans. The spawning season is in August and the eggs are encased in gelatinous substance. Poisonous gland in the spinous part of the dorsal fin, which causes severe pain when stabbed. |
