(Source; invasions.si.edu/nemesis/species_summary/643689).

(Source/The Online Guide to the Animals of Trinidad and Tobago)

General; Pterois miles is known as the devil firefish or common lionfish. It is frequently confused with its close relative, the red lionfish(Pterois volitans). It is very similar in appearance to Red lionfish (Pterois volitans), but its head is less angled. The scientific name is from Greek pteron, meaning "wing", and Latin miles, meaning "soldier".

Head is large, up to one third its body length. Body depth 2.7-2.9 in SL. The body is covered with small cycloid(rounded) scales. A pair of tentacles above the eyes, some are very short, but most are long. Tentacle above eye may be faintly banded. Adults have a band of small spines along the cheek. Males and females look exactly alike except during times of mating. Adults typically grow up to 30cm in length, but can reach 43cm and weigh 1.1kg. The dorsal fin spines appear feathery. Characterized by having each dorsal spine free of membrane except basally.

The pectoral fins are large. The pectoral fin rays are all unbranched soft rays. The membranes of the upper pectoral fin rays are separated from the neighboring rays for almost their entire length, and the lower rays are separated from their neighbors by about 1/2 of the ray length. The rays of the pectoral fin can rotate so that the inner and outer sides of the membrane are in opposite directions, and when the sides are parallel to the bottom(or water surface), they form an angle like an airplane wing. When the membrane is horizontal, the fin membrane is not visible when the fish is viewed from the front, but only the thin rays.

These fish vary in colour from maroon to reddish, tan or grey and have numerous thin, dark, vertical bars on their heads and bodies. Small spots in the median fins.

Devil firefish is usually found in areas with crevices or lagoons, often on the outer slopes of coral reefs. The Devil firefish(or Common lionfish) is mainly nocturnal and hides in crevices during the daytime. It feeds on fish and small crustaceans and even feeding on its own juveniles at times. It has few predators, probably because of its venomous spines. Moray eels have shown resistance to the spines and it was reported that lion fish are included in their diet. The bluespotted cornetfish(Fistularia commersonii) has been shown to feed on it, as also do groupers in the Bahamas. and reef sharks are also its predators.

Hazards of the spines
All spines of dorsal and anal fin with venom that is produced from the enclosing skin. The caudal (tail) rays are not enclosed by venom-producing skin. The fin spines are highly venomous and have caused death to humans in some reported cases. Despite this, a sting from this species is rarely fatal to humans. Nevertheless, a sting can cause extreme pain, vomiting, convulsion, minor paralysis, and breathing difficulties. Therefore, immediate emergency medical attention is strongly recommended, even for healthy adults who have been stung, as some people are more sensitive to the venom than others after being stung, and symptoms and reactions from the venom vary in severity from person to person.

Reproduction
A two-year old devil firefish would have reached maturity. There is a courtship phase between the fish that occurs right before dark and leads on late into the night, where the male and female circle around each other, then ascend near the surface of the water. The female releases her eggs and the male fertilizes it and the egg clumps float. Embryos then form in adhesive mucus and within a few days they become free floating larvae. The size of larvae on hatching is estimated to be about 1.5 mm. During one mating session, a female can lay up to30,000 eggs during spawning. Once warm water is present, it can reproduce easily throughout the year because it is an asynchronous batch spawner.

Behaviour.
Adults are solitary, juveniles typically live alone or in small groups. When a predator approaches an adult, it expands its pectoral fins and there is no flight response. The predator moves back as the devil firefish approaches even when its pectoral fins are not fully on display. The devil firefish’s prey avoid it as well even though it may not be a known predator species to that fish in non-native areas. This is probably due to its striking colour.

Problems of Introduced Lionfish in Western Atlantic Ocean.
All fish called lionfish(in English) belong to the genus Pterois, of which 12 species are known, and are endemic to the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, and are not originally distributed in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The Devil firefish(Pterois miles) is native to the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, East Africa, and Western Indonesia(Sumatra Island), while the better-known Red lionfish(Pterois volitans) is native to the westernmost Indian Ocean and tropical eastern Pacific. and these two species have overlapping habitats in some areas.

The Devil firefish(Pterois miles) of the Mediterranean was introduced from the Red Sea via the Suez Canal, while the Devil firefish(Pterois miles) and Red lionfish(Pterois volitans) of the Western Atlantic were first introduced probably in Florida by aquarium enthusiasts. In 2004, a census of lionfish populations was conducted from the southern Caribbean to North Carolina and Bermuda, and Red lionfish were found to be far more numerous than Devil firefish. It is difficult to distinguish between Devil firefish and Red lionfish by their appearance, so in these waters the two species are often collectively referred to as "Pterois volitans/miles". (Source; invasions.si.edu/nemesis/species_summary/643689).

These two species of lionfish(hereafter referred to Pterois miles and Pterois volitans) are very dangerous fish predators with venomous spines, but they are also good food fish. In the Western Atlantic, the lionfish population is increasing significantly. These fish are actively preying on other fish in the waters they invade, causing the extinction of endemic fishes. The lionfish population increase is also bad for the people of the Caribbean region. it increases the likelihood of tourists being attacked by the venomous spines causing serious pain and swelling. This may deter tourists causing an economic decline which is crucial for Caribbean countries.

In 2006, Bermuda started licensing trained fishers to kill these fish by spearing alongside shores. In 2005, the officials of the Bahamian fisheries issued an order to fishermen to kill these overpopulated fish. There is advancing techniques being developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to catch these fish in deeper areas where divers cannot reach. It has become so critical that Florida has developed a rapid response program (both federal and non-governmental) operating across over thirty states to curb this problem.(Source/The Online Guide to the Animals of Trinidad and Tobago)
