Oder Scorpaeniformes Family Scorpaenidae(Scorpionfishes or rockfishes) Distribution; Indo-West Pacific/South Africa, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, Tanzania, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Em., Kuwait, Iran, Iraq, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Andaman Is, Thailand, Viet Nam, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Myanmar, Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Australia, Micronesia, Papua New Guinea. A pair of short barbells on tip of the snout(visible in the fresh specimen). A pair of spines between the eyes and three pairs of spines behind them. The head has two strong spines on the infraorbital, three on the posterior margin of the preopercle, and one on the upper surface of the opercle. Two small leaf-shaped skin flap on the margin of the preopercle. A small and a large leaf-shaped projection on the middle of the upper jaw. The fins are well developed, with the dorsal and pectoral fins being particularly long. The sixth dorsal fin spine is the longest, and its length is similar to body depth. The membrane of the dorsal fin spine is only slightly connected to the adjacent spine at the base. The pectoral fin rays are all unbranched, with the membranes of the upper rays barely connected to the adjacent rays, and the lower rays connected to the adjacent rays for about half of their length. The posterior end of the pectoral fin extends well beyond the posterior end of the anal fin base. The pelvic fin begins slightly behind the lower tip of the pectoral fin base and reaches the anal fin base. The margins of dorsal soft ray part, anal fin and the caudal fin are rounded. Numerous reddish-brown vertical stripes on the head and body, each of varying width, with narrow white stripes between the colored stripes. The pectoral fin usually brown. No distinct stripes on the pectoral fin membrane, but with several black spots arranged at regular intervals on the stem. Many small white spots on the pelvic fin, and also white spots on the inner side of the pectoral fin at the base. The Plaintail turkeyfish is a benthic species. It is found on sandy and muddy bottoms of open sea reefs and well-protected shallow, and brackish waters between 15–60 m. It is also found in inlets and along the coast. It is a solitary species. It feeds on small fish, crabs, and shrimp. It is nocturnal and rests in crevices or under the eaves of reefs during the day. Has poisonous fin spines. It is edible, but not commercially traded food fish, and is occasionally traded in aquarium fish market. ※ Note/Molecular studies, and some morphological data too, have indicated that this species and the luna lionfish(Pterois lunulata) are the same species, Pterois russelii. |
