D1/spine 7~8, D2/soft rays 10~12. A/soft rays 11~13. Pectoral fin/soft rays 15(12+iii). Ventral fin/spine 1, soft ray 5. Gill rakers/2+13, LL/60. Caudal fin/12. Vertebrae/9-10+17-18.

Distribution; Indo-west Pacific/western tropical Australia, New Caledonia, Mariana Island, South China Sea, southern Japan and southern Korea(Jeju Island).
General; Body elongated, anterior body large, became smaller backward. Has a large, triangular head. A pair of nasal spines located at middle of snout. Preopercle and opercular with one short spine respectively. Opercular spine being shorter than the lower one and pointing obliquely upwards and backwards. The posterior end of lower spine extends beyond the posterior margin of the operculum. There is a brachial spine above the base of the pectoral fin, broad and flat, reaching nearly to base of sixth spine of first dorsal fin. The spines on the rostrum spine very long and forward pointing.

Origin of the first dorsal fin is positioned posterior to the posterior end of the pelvic fin base. The last 7th spine of the dorsal fin is connected to the dorsal part by the fin membrane. There are 10 bucklers, bony flat plates, along both sides of the first dorsal fin base, with the first buckler extending to the front of the first spine. There is no bony plate at the base of the second dorsal fin. The origin of the 2nd dorsal fin is slightly behind the 3rd soft ray of the anal fin. 2nd dorsal fin unbranched only in front 2 soft rays. The anal fin origin is located slightly forward of anterior end of second dorsal fin. Anal fin branched only in rear 4 soft rays.

The pectoral fins are significantly elongated, and their posterior ends reach behind the 8th soft ray of the 2nd dorsal fin and the 9th soft ray of the anal fin. Pectoral fin with three lowermost rays free and detached from the remaining fin rays. Origin of pelvic fin is slightly posterior to base of pectoral fin. Pelvic fin soft rays are all branched. The posterior ends of the folded pelvic fins do not reach the anus. The last soft ray of the pelvic fin is continuous with the body by the fin membrane. The caudal fin is truncated. The anus is open just before the base of the anal fin and has an almost circular shape.

Eye large and projected outside, located above head, with no spines around the eye. Interorbital space somewhat deeply concave. Mouth size almost the same as eye diameter. The posterior end of the maxilla does not reach just below the anterior margin of the orbit. The maxillary, mandibular, and vomer bones are densely populated with small conical teeth forming a dental band. The palatal bone has no teeth.

Body covered with cycloid scales, scales on the back of the body are partly buried under the skin. Ventral part behind isthmus and the area around the anus are not scaled. Head without scales. Lateral line scales small.

The specific name is a compound of multi with ocellata, which means "having eye-like spots", an allusion to the upper half of the body having a scattering of small greenish yellow dark-brown spots. With no black spots. Body overall reddish, belly and below head white. Pectoral fin black with greenish yellow blotched pattern, except white part of bone. Detached pectoral fins dark reddish. Dorsal fins reddish with small green spots, ventral and caudal fins reddish; anal fin white.
