Japanese name/Tomiyo
Chinese name/

Distribution; Asia/streams flow to east coasts in north of central Korean Peninsula including Dae-dong river, Yalu river that flow to west coasts. Other country; Japan, Kuril islands, Amur basin and Kamchatka Peninsula.
General; The body is long and strongly compressed. 7-10 separated spines in front of dorsal fin, and the spine membrane is transparent. Appearance similar to Short nine spine stickleback(Pungitius kaibarae), but the membrane of Pungitius kaibarae is black while transparent in Pungitius sinensis. Pelvic and anal fin also have 1 spine respectively. In the middle of the side of the body, crescent-shaped bony plates are arranged in one row along the lateral line from the back of the gill cover to the end of caudal peduncle The plates behind of gill cover and in peduncle are small in size, but plates behind of 4th dorsal spine are large. Caudal peduncle is very thin and short. Margin of caudal fin is truncated or slightly rounded outward. The lateral line is complete. The mouth faces up at an angle, and the lower jaw is slightly longer than the upper jaw or almost equal.

The ground color of the body is gray green, the back is dark green, and the belly is light yellow. On the side of the body there are darker greenish brown irregular patterns. In the spawning season, the male's spine and body turn slightly blackish.

Inhabit middle reaches of clear steams where water grass developed. Male build nest out of plant fragments using mucus secreted by the kidney, Nest is placed on the stems of aquatic plants within 30 cm of water depth and the level of house is slightly above the bottom. Male attract female by a zigzag dance to enter the nest, then the male stimulates the female's tail with his snout to induce spawning. After spawning, males keep their nests and protect their eggs until they hatch. When an enemy invades, it defends by raising spine, does not take a rest for a while, does not eat anything, and concentrates on protecting and hatching the eggs in the nest. Even after the eggs hatched, the male does not leave the nest immediately. Continues protecting for about 5 days more until the hatchlings grow up enough to survive. Male die on the spot after the end of duty. His dead body is served as food to the young. The lifespan is 1 year. Both female and male die after spawning,

The spawning season is estimated to be April-August, but not clear. It lives in fresh water throughout its life and mainly feeds on daphnia, midget larva, and worms. In the fall after the spawning season, large schooling of adults are seen occasionally. On May 31, 2012, it was designated as endangered wildlife class 2 and protected by Korean government.
