Japanese name/Shinonome-sakatazame(東雲坂田鮫,しののめさかたざめ,シノノメサカタザメ)

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific/Persian Gulf, Red Sea and East Africa to Papua New Guinea, north to southern Korea, southern Japan, south to New South Wales, Australia.
General: Taxonomy; Family Rhinidae(Wedgefishes) which includes Bowmouth guitarfish(Rhina ancylostoma) had been classified in Order Rajiformes(Skates). At present, Rhinidae is designated into Order Rhinopristiformes(Shovelnose rays) that newly established. Wedgefishes(Family Rhinidae) comprises 3 Genera with 10 species.

Rhina ancylostoma has a wide and thick body. Head short and flat with a rounded snout. and large shark-like dorsal and tail fins. The entire dorsal surface has a grainy texture from a dense covering of tiny dermal denticles. Heavy ridges of spiky thorns over the eyes and on the back and shoulders. These spikes have a defensive function(can be used for butting). Jaws with heavily ridged, crushing teeth in undulating rows. The five pairs of ventral gill slits are positioned close to the lateral margins of the head.

The broad and triangular pectoral fins have a deep indentation where their leading margins meet the head. The pelvic fins are much smaller than the pectoral fins, and the anal fin is absent. The tail is much longer than the body and ends in a large, crescent-shaped caudal fin; the lower caudal fin lobe is more than half the length of the upper. Medium-sized eyes and large spiracles.

Grey or brownish above, white below; numerous white spots dorsally on fins, body and tail; black spots on head and shoulders but no eyespots or ocelli. These spots more distinctive in young specimens. Two dark transverse bands atop the head between the eyes.

Inhabits coastal areas and on coral reefs, close inshore. Found on sand and mud bottoms. Sometimes found in the water column. Feeds mainly on bottom crustaceans and mollusks. Exhibit ovoviparity(aplacental viviparity), with embryos feeding initially on yolk, then receiving additional nourishment from the mother by indirect absorption of uterine fluid enriched with mucus, fat or protein through specialised structures. Produces litters of 2-11 pups. Size at birth 45 cm. The tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) is known to prey on Rhina ancylostoma.

Caught commonly by demersal tangle net, and occasionally trawl and longline fisheries. When caught in trawls its bulk and thorny skin cause it to damage netted catches. Utilized fresh and dried-salted; the pectoral fins are the only part which is eaten.
