Distribution; Indo-West Pacific/Jeju Island in Korea, Southern Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Guam, Caroline Islands (Federated States of Micronesia and Republic of Palau), New Caledonia, Eastern Australia, Southern Indonesia, Malaysia, Northern Borneo, Durban City in South Africa, East Coast of Africa, Madagascar, Mauritius, Shellsey Island..
General; The Weedy scorpionfish is a rare species and has no commercial value as food, but is sold at very high prices in the aquarium trade because of its strange appearance. There are venom glands under the spines of the dorsal fin, making it a dangerous creature in the sea. The specific epithet “frondosa” is Spanish for “leafy” and symbolizes the numerous cortical protrusions all over the body. In the English common name(Weedy scorpionfish), “weedy” is used instead of leafy. The numerous protrusions can be weedy-like, leaf-like, or like long animal fur depending on the environment. There are also cases where there are no protrusions at all and they are plain. It is all a camouflage technique that adapts to the environment.

The body is relatively short in length and high in depth. Head and body compressed. The head is large. The forehead bone is highly protruding. The dorsum of the head is strongly concave behind the eyes and then rises sharply toward the body dorsum. The snout is strongly concave. The eyes are small and set high on the head. The orbit of the eye is slightly protruding from rear margin of orbit. The mouth is large, located at the front of the head, and opens obliquely upward. The lower jaw protrudes slightly forward than the upper jaw.

Has single dorsal fin, long and large, divided into spine part and soft rayed part. The origin of dorsal fin is far ahead of the upper corner of gill cover margin. The base of the hard spine part is longer than the base of the soft rays. The more anteriorly positioned spines on the dorsal fin, membranes notched more deeply. The sixth spine is the longest. The distal margins of the soft-rayed parts of the dorsal, pelvic, anal and caudal fins have either no notches or they are rather weakly notched. The tip of each fin ray in the caudal fin is divided into four branches. The spines of the dorsal fin are relatively flexible and have tips which bend easily under even the slightest pressure. The pectoral fin is broad and large, located on the lower side of the body, and the posterior end extends beyond the origin of the anal fin. The number of pectoral fin rays is 16, with the lower 8 rays and the upper 1 to 3(?) rays being unbranched, and the remaining rays in the middle being branched. The pelvic fin is large, extended and located on the chest. Caudal fin is rounded.

There is one nasal spine, but it often disappears. The preopercular bone has 4 spines, the opercular bone has 2 forked ribs and 1 weak spine at each rear end. The lower and interopercular bones have no spines. A large protrusion above the eye is considered one of its characteristics. This protrusion is branched, but not necessarily pronounced. All parts of the head, body, and fins have cortical protrusions of various shapes depending on the environment, and in some environments, smooth with no protrusions or spines at all. The shape is very variable, such as a clump of aquatic plants, a tangle of small wood branches, and a tuft of long hairs. The fin membrane varies from almost completely transparent to completely opaque.

Also the color of the body and protrusions varies greatly in relation to habitat. Usually yellow, brown, dark brown, maroon, purple and red. One of the many characteristics is the case that the protrusions do not protrude but are patterned; numerous round spots cover the body, its border line is dark and the inside is the same color as the background body color, but the density changes to make them stand out clearly. In the case of plain specimens with few protrusions, only the round dark borders can be barely seen. The preserved specimen with faded color has one or two black spots, usually smaller than the eye diameter, in the middle of the membrane between the sixth and ninth dorsalfin soft rays.

Body covered with small round scales. The head is scaleless. The thorax and base of the tail fin have small scales. The dorsal, anal and pelvic fins are scaleless. The lateral line complete, the front end is obliquely straight, the rear end is straight, and the end extends to the base of the caudal fin.

Found in rich soft-bottom habitats in current prone channels also in rocky or coralline habitats near algae where it camouflages itself. Hunts prey at night like other species of scorpaenids, feeding on fish and small invertebrates. Solitary. Depths range 10-297m. It has the ability to camouflage and often hides its body so that it is not easily discovered. It bears some characteristics similar to Rhinopias eschmeyeri(Eschmeyer's scorpionfish or Paddleflap Scorpionfish).
