(Kumgang fat minnow)
Rhynchocypris kumgangensis(Kim, 1980). 10 cm TL
동종이명(synomym); Phoxinus kumgangensis.
Korean name/Kumgang-mo-chi(금강모치)
Dorsal spines 3, Dorsal soft rays 6~7. Anal spines 3, Anal soft rays 7~9. LL/58-65. Vert/38-39. Gill raker/6~8

Distribution; Asia/endemic to Korea. North of central Korean peninsula, streams flow to west coast including Yalu River in North Korea. Some mountain streams flow to east coast.
General; The name “Kumgang fat minnow” is derived from the fact that this fish was found first in Mt. Kumgang(or Mt. Geumgang/金剛山). Body elongated, oval in cross section and slightly compressed posteriorly. Eye relatively large, placed ahead of head center and shifted dorso-head. With 2 nostrils that spaced closely. Snout tip pointed, lower jaw slightly shorter than upper jaw. Gill opening placed just behind the opercula. Barbels absent. Dorsal fin begins behind the origin of pelvic fin, triangular in shape and with almost straight margin. The shape of anal fin similar to dorsal fin and with almost straight margin. Caudal fin deeply emarginated and the lobes slightly rounded.

With small scales. Lateral line complete. Brown dorsally, silvery white ventrally. Orange stripe along the mid line of body and lower ventral line respectively. The lower orange stripe begins from pectoral fin base to posterior end of anal fin base. A pale lateral stripe just above the upper orange stripe. A black transverse bar on dorsal fin base; from the first soft ray(excluding spines) to the last soft ray. In contrast, the black transverse bar of the new species "Rhynchocypris deogyuensis" that separated from R. kumgangensis is continuous from the first spine to the last soft ray.

Inhabit extreme upper reach of streams where water cold, clear and with gravel bottoms. Swims in mid depth, feed on insects and crustaceans. Spawn in April to May, many specimens come together in slow water for spawn, a female followed by many males, lay eggs beneath gravels. Hatchlings grow 5cm in single year.
