Rhynchocypris semotilus(Jordan & Starks, 1905). 12 cm TL
동종이명(synomym); Phoxinus semotilus
Korean name/beo-deul-ga-ji(버들가지)
Dorsal spines 3, Dorsal soft rays 7-8. Anal spines 3, Anal soft rays 6~7. LL/66-76. Vert/37-38. Gill raker/6

Distribution; Asia/Endemic to Korean Peninsula. Streams flow to east coasts in north eastern part of Korean peninsula, from Ham-heung(North Korea) south to Song-hyeon-cheon stream in Gang-reung district.
General; Similar to Korean minnow and Chinese minnow, but smaller in size and distinguished by the black blotch on base of caudal fin. Body chunky, slightly compressed. Eye big. Snout pointed. Lower jaw slightly protruded ahead of upper jaw. Absent in barbels. Origin of dorsal fin located well behind of pelvic fin origin. Margin of caudal fin rounded. Caudal fin emarginated shallowly. Scales on flank relatively large. Scales are cycloid, margins of scales are dark brown color in shape of crescents.

Overall body color is dark brown and deeper dorsally. A narrow vertical blackish blotch on mid base of caudal fin. A blackish broad brown stripe along the ridge of back from behind the head to middle of peduncle. Deep yellow color beneath the pectoral fin base(armpit), with yellowish hue on anterior bases of dorsal, and anal fins.
Lateral line complete and straight, but slightly arcing down in anterior part.

Inhabits upper streams, prefers clear valley streams. Kumgang fat minnow(Rhynchocypris kumgangensis), the similar species, shares habitats with Black star fat minnow. Kumgang fat minnow prefers lower richer streams than the slow, narrow far upper streams where preferred by Black star fat minnows. Swims swiftly in schools, easily frightened and hide. Feed on aquatic insects, including small crustaceans and filamentous worms. Spawn in April to May. Males get nuptial tubercles of white color on head and ahead of dorsal fin.
