Distribution; Northwest Pacific/Streams flow to eastern and western coasts of northern Korea, Japan, Sakhalin, Kuril Islands, Kamchatka Peninsula, Aleutian island, Maritime region. North America/Arctic and Pacific drainages from lower Mackenzie River in Northwest Territories, Canada to Puget Sound and Quinault River in Washington, USA.
General; There are two forms of Dolly Varden which differ in number of vertebrae and in number of chromosomes. In addition, northern form Dolly Varden can attain a much larger size(up to 27 pounds) than southern-form fish. The southern form ranges from Southeast Alaska throughout the Gulf of Alaska to the south side of the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian and Kodiak islands. The northern form ranges from the north side of the Alaska Peninsula northward to the Mackenzie River in Canada, and in the Susitna drainage in Southcentral Alaska. Both freshwater-resident and sea-run populations occur in both the northern and southern forms. Freshwater-resident Dolly Varden are often dwarfed(maturing at 3–6 inches), and are most-commonly found in small headwater streams without easy access to the ocean, or in land-locked lakes and ponds. Dolly Varden may also choose to remain in fresh water if they have access to a large, productive lake or river, in which they may grow to a similar size as sea-run Dolly Varden.

Specimens in Korea and Japan are all land locked populations. Anadromous specimens grow to maximum 127cm TL, while the landlocked specimens in Korea 25cm in max size. Body elongate, somewhat rounded, greatest body depth below dorsal fin. Head rather long. Mouth large. Upper jaw reaches slightly behind of posterior margin of eye. Scales small and cycloid. Lateral line straight and located on middle of body. Pelvic fin below the dorsal fin. Pelvic fins with free-tipped fleshy appendage above its insertion. Caudal emarginated shallowly.

Juvenile Dolly Varden(and freshwater-resident adults) vary in color depending on the waters they inhabit. In clear streams and lakes, young Dolly Varden are usually olive-brown, but in glacial streams they are pale silver-gray. While living in freshwater before going to sea, young Dolly Varden have 8–12 dark, irregularly-shaped vertical bars(parr marks) on their sides straddling the lateral line. Pale white or orange to red spots, brightening at the onset of maturity, begin to develop when juveniles reach 3–4 inches in length.

While in the ocean, and for a short time after entering fresh water, adult sea-run Dolly Varden are silvery with a faint green sheen overlain with light orange spots. Once they reach fresh water, this silvery appearance transitions into greenish-brown with dark-orange to red spots. As spawning season approaches, males become brilliantly colored with red, black and white bellies, black gill covers, bright orange to red spots, and bright orange and black fins with a bright-white leading edge. Males also develop a strongly-hooked jaw(kype). Female spawners develop similar characteristics, but to a lesser degree. As spawning season approaches, freshwater form adults develop spawning colors as described above for sea-run Dolly Varden. Dwarf freshwater forms often retain parr marks as adults.

Occurs in deep runs and pools of creeks and small to large rivers; also in lakes and the sea. Lives in very clean mountain streams. Nerito-pelagic. Typically anadromous, but many populations are landlocked. Anadromous fish may spend 2-3 years at sea, evidently near shore, migrate upstream usually in fall, and spawn during spring. Young remain in streams for 3-4 years and feed on insects, leeches, snails, and salmon eggs before entering brackish and salt water to feed on insects, fishes, and other invertebrates.

Adults from the sea and lakes enter rivers to spawn. A female selects a nest site and begins to dig a redd while the male continues to court her and drive away intruding males. Upon completion of the redd, both drop into it and release eggs and sperm. This may be repeated several times before the eggs are covered by the female who swims along the edge of the of the redd, sweeping small pebbles and other particles into it with her tail and anal fin. Later, she may dig again and further cover the eggs while preparing a new nest. Breeding is an annual event for southern populations; occurring every second or third year in the Arctic. Males and females reportedly die after spawning.

※ The English name “Dolly varden trout” is taken from the vogue in fashion for women at that time of middle 1870s that was called "Dolly Varden", a dress of sheer figured muslin worn over a bright-colored petticoat.  Representing the beauty of this fish.
