Lateral view of Spotted armoured-gurnard(Satyrichthys rieffeli) |
Oder Scorpaeniformes Family Peristediidae(Armored searobins or armored gurnards). Distribution; Indo-West Pacific/southwestern sea of Korea(Yellow Sea), southern tip of Japan's mainlands, East China Sea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vanuatu, Fiji, Andaman Sea, Gulf of Mannar in northern Sri Lanka from Bay of Bengal(southeast coast of India). Indonesia's Java Island, the Timor Sea and Arafura Sea in northern Australia, northwestern and northeastern Australia. (※Data base date; March 2023) No spine on snout. Two small backward-facing spines behind the temporal bone. The preopercle has a long, sharp spine that longer than opercular spines. Two opercular spines, the upper one is very small and almost disappears and lower one is large with a ridge. Gill rakers on the first arch resemble a stick with minute spines on inner side. Barbels present on the lip and chin; in lips three unbranched barbels on the anterior side and single long branched barbels on the posterior side; four unbranched on chin. The longest barbel extending to the front edge of the eyes. Body is covered with bony plate-like scales, Body bony plates arranged in four horizontal rows, each plate with one sharp backwardly directed spine. The dorsal rows reached up to caudal peduncle, anterior most bony plate in dorsal row largest and ventral row ends before the anus. Anterior five bony plates in upper lateral row small, and small spine absent. Lower lateral row terminating on caudal peduncle. The first dorsal fin and the second dorsal fin are continuous with a V-shaped notch between them. Dorsal fin originates between first and second bony plates in dorsal row and the base of dorsal fin ends on anterior portion of caudal peduncle. Anal fin originating posterior to anus. Pectoral fin reaching to base of first anal fin ray; lower two rays completely free like fingers and greatly thickened, upper finger ray longer than the lower. Pelvic fins reaches up to anus. The margin of caudal fin weakly emarginated. In fresh specimen, head and body dark brown with brown spots on head, dorsal and dorsal fins (Some sources describe it as a light red color). Posterior half of longest barbels blackish. Anal, pelvic and caudal fins are dark brown and two free pectoral fin rays brown in colour. Mainly inhabit sandy mud bottom waters of 65~600m depth. Feed on benthic animals such as small crustaceans and small fish, sucking and eating. They often form flocks, and the further south you go, the higher the density of the flock. The Spotted armoured-gurnard is often caught by trawl netting at depths of around 80m on the continental shelf. It has little meat and is hard, so it has little utility value, but it is suitable for cooking soup, usually cooked with bean paste; or used as fish meal, etc. And the bony plates attached to the surface of the body can be easily peeled off by heating. More than tens of tons are caught annually, but most of them are discarded. |
