Lateral view of Brushtooth lizardfish(Saurida undosquamis) |
Order Aulopiformes(Grinners). Family Synodontidae(Lizardfishes). Distribution; Eastern Indian Ocean and western Pacific/Malay Peninsula, southern Philippines, northern Java, Arafura Sea, Louisiade Archipelago, and northern half and southwestern Australia. ※The world distribution of this species is confusing, so this data may not be accurate. Speaking of the difference between the Saurida undosquamis(English name; Brush-tooth lizardfish) and the Saurida macrolepis(no global English name called as Largescale saury in Australia); the Saurida undosquamis has several small black dots stamped at regular intervals on ① the front edge of the dorsal fin and ② the upper edge of the caudal fin. ③The lower margin of the caudal fin is black. ④The ventral side of body is darkish, not white. On the other hand, the Saurida macrolepis has no row of black dots on the front edge of the dorsal fin, but only on the upper margin of the caudal fin. And the ventral side of body and lower margin of caudal fin is white. Body elongate, slender, and cylindrical and slightly compressed. Head pointed and depressed when look from side, the snout rounded when look down from above. Eye moderate size. Adipose eyelid on anterior and posterior margins of eye. Mouth large, gape tending obliquely. Upper jaw not protractile, bordered its entire length by premaxilla, its length more than 1/2 head length and extending far over posterior margin of orbit. 2 teeth bands on palatines, and teeth on vomer and tongue. Head and body with cycloid scales. Scales. not extending beyond base of caudal fin. Dorsal fin about midway on back. Dorsal origin closer to the adipose origin than the snout tip. Anal fin origin is closer to the tail base than the operculum. The rear end of the pectoral fin passes beyond the origin of the pelvic fin. Caudal fin forked, upper and lower lobes of caudal fin about equal in length. Color is brown-gray above or pale yellowish brown, and pale dark ventrally. With 8-10 indistinct darker spots along the middle of the sides(along the lateral line). Inside of pectoral fins uniformly dusky. Upper edge of caudal fin with about 8 black spots or bars. Also one row of black spots on the leading edge of dorsal fin. The lower edge of the caudal fin is black. Found on the sublittoral zone above 100m over sand or mud bottoms of coastal waters. Feeds on small fishes, crustaceans, and other invertebrates. Spawns from April to May off Japan. Generally marketed frozen, sometimes fresh and as fish cakes('kamaboko') in Japan . |
Distrtbution map of Brushtooth lizardfish(Saurida undosquamis). Main reference/AquaMaps (2019, October). Author/fishillust. com. ※ The distribution points scattered much wider than the text, I cannot explain it. The southwestern coasts of Korea included here, but the current information(as of 2022) does not indicate that this species was found in Korea. There is a lot of confusion around the world about the distribution of this species and Saurida macrolepis |
