Dorsal spines (total): 7 - 8; Dorsal soft rays (total): 19-21; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 17 - 19.

분포; 인도•태평양: 일본 남부에서부터 오스트레일리아, 하와이, 동아프리카, 홍해, 라인섬, 투아모토 섬에 분포.
일반개요; 비교적 맑은 물에서만 발견된다. 유어는 얕은 수심의 연안이나 기수에 산다. 측선 위와 아래에 6~8쌍의 어두운 점들이 있다. 등지느러미와 뒷지느러미 후단에 여러 개의 반분리 토막지느러미(semi-detached finlets)가 있다. 연안 암초 0~100m 수심 범위에서 유영 생활을 한다. 주로 단독이지만 소수의 무리로 다니기도 한다. 작은 물고기, 갑각류를 먹는다. 유어는 다른 물고기의 비늘을 뜯어 먹는다.

Distribution; Indo-Pacific/Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii, Marquesas, Line and Tuamoto islands, north to southern Japan, south to New South Wales and Rapa.
General: 6~8 double series of dusky blotches above and below lateral line. Scutes absent. Several semi-detached finlets at posterior parts of dorsal and anal fins. From surface to 100m depth in coastal waters. Feed on small fishes and crustaceans, juveniles feed on scales torn from other fishes.
