Oder Scorpaeniformes Family Scorpaenidae(Scorpionfishes or rockfishes) Distribution; Indo-West Pacific/Widely distributed in tropical and temperate zones of the western Pacific and Indian Oceans, including Jeju Island in Korea and southern Japan, Southeast Asia, Australia, Red Sea, and southern Africa, and is also found in the Mediterranean Sea. Has only one dorsal fin that composed of spine and soft ray parts, and the membrane in between is dented inward. The base length of spine part is slightly longer than that of the soft part. The length of spines from third to 8th are all same. The rear end of the pelvic fin almost reaches the anus. The anal fin starts below the 3rd soft ray of the dorsal fin, and the base is short. Ray of upper pectoral fin is branched. 4 spines on the dorsal edge of eye and 2 strong spines behind eye. Two strong, serrated spines near parietal region. 1 spine in front of eye. The nostril area is indented. 4 spines on the front edge of eyes and 1 spine on the upper part in front of eye. 3 spines in a row under eye(infraorbital). There are a total of 9 spines around gill area; looking at each part, 5 spines in preoperculum, 2 spines in operculum, and 2 spines above main operculum in shoulder blade that support the pectoral fin. Numerous beard-shaped projections are densely distributed on the head and body; in case of head, the projections are distributed in anterior nostril, lower part of preorbital bone, upper part of the maxilla, front edge of the lower jaw, posterior edge of the anterior maxilla, back of the eye socket, and the parietal part. Color and markings of body and head show considerable variation. the belly is white. Spine part of dorsal fin with wavy black pattern on a bright red background, the soft ray part with black dots only in the base part and anterior third portion. The pectoral fin is red as a whole, with about 3 black vertical stripes on the upper part and pink vertical stripes on the lower half. Pectoral fin base white. Pelvic and anal fins with light red background, center part of anal fin slightly black. The caudal fin is deep red and has 3-4 indistinct black vertical stripes. Color of this fish varies depending on their habitat; color resembles nearby coral or rock, and hides between them waiting for prey, when small fish approach, it quickly swallows it at one action. Similarly, when a predator approaches, it stays still until it comes close, and at the decisive moment when it is likely to be caught, it creates dust and blurs its sight and run away. Inhabits demersal marine environment at a depth of 3 to 91m of coastal waters with many corals and reefs, and feeds on crustaceans and small fish. Not commercial food species, edible. Spines with venom. |
