Oder Scorpaeniformes Family Scorpaenidae(Scorpionfishes or rockfishes) Distribution; East Indo-Western Pacific/South of Jeju Island in Korea, Ryukyu Islands, Philippines, Indonesia, West Central Australia, Queensland, Solomon Sea, Fiji, New Caledonia, Tonga, Society Islands It has long, stocky body, and broad large head. The trunk is compressed laterally. The eyes of the Papuan scorpionfish are larger than those of other congenrs. The space between the eyes is concave. The snout is relatively long. The head and body are covered with ctenoid scales. The lateral line is complete and slightly tilted toward dorsal side. The mouth is a typical ambush predator, with an upward-slanting mouth that can protrude forward. There are teeth on both jaws and the vomer, but no teeth on the palatine bone. The lower jaw is protruded forward more than the upper jaw. The posterior end of the upper jaw passes the center of the eye, but does not reach the posterior end of the eye. The dorsal fin origin is in front of the uppermost tip of the gill cover margin. The last spine of the dorsal fin is longer than the previous spine. The margin of soft ray part of dorsal fin is rounded. The origin of soft rayed dorsal fin is slightly in front of the origin of anal fin. The posterior end of anal fin base is in front of the posterior end of soft rayed dorsal fin base. The second anal fin spine is slightly longer than the third spine. The upper origin of the pectoral fin is located slightly below the horizontal axis of the body center. The posterior end of the pectoral fin does not reach the origin of the anal fin. The pelvic fin origin is located behind the lower origin of pectoral fin, and its posterior end reaches the anus(cloaca). The posterior end of the caudal fin is slightly rounded and truncate. Numerous leaf-shaped cortical protrusions all over the head, including the snout, upper jaw, ventral part of the lower jaw, above the eyes, occiput, preopercle, and gill cover. The size of the cortical projection above the eye is about twice the diameter of the pupil, and may be shaped like a long-stemmed leaf or a rod. There are also small rod-shaped or leaf-shaped protrusions on each fin and body. Juveniles have a forward-facing protrusion above the eyes. The lateral line is complete and shifted dorsally. The top of head and the body are covered with ctenoid scales, space on opercle between opercular spines scaled The body color is variable because it camouflages itself according to the environment it is in. A common appearance is mottling of brown or reddish-brown background with many white spots. Sometimes, single dark purple blotch appears on the rear of the spiny part of the dorsal fin. A distinct oval blackish-brown spot on inner side of pectoral fin, just below the middle of the last branched soft fin ray. It is found at depths of between 1 and 40 m in coral and rocky areas and also in sandy coastal slopes, estuaries and lagoons, frequently found in rubble areas covered in algae. Feeds on fishes. Scorpaenopsis papuensis is solitary and difficult to see due to camouflage colors, cryptic species which is an ambush predator of fishes, waiting for prey to approach near enough to be engulfed by its mouth and eaten. The Papuan scorpionfish exhibits biofluorescence, that is, when illuminated by blue or ultraviolet light, it re-emits it as red, and appears differently than under white light illumination. Biofluorescence may assist in intraspecific communication and camouflage. The Papuan Scorpionfish is not as toxic as its relatives, but it does possess venomous spines that can inflict painful wounds. Scorpaenopsis papuensis occasionally makes its way into the aquarium trade. Hobbyists appreciate this species for its unique appearance and behavior. When threatened, it can display vibrant warning colors to deter predators. Little is known about the reproductive habits of the Papuan Scorpionfish in the wild or in captivity. They are presumed to be egg-layers, with external fertilization. |
