Distribution; Northwest Pacific/Gangwon-do province(central east coast of Korea) and Cheongjin (east coast of North Korea), Primorsky Krai in Russia, northeastern Japan(Hokkaido, Aomori Prefecture, Shimane Prefecture, Chiba Prefecture, Sagami Bay), and the Kuril Islands(source; zukan-bouz.com/syu/バラメヌケ)
General; The etymology of the specific name ‘baramenuke’ is the name of this fish in the Hokkaido region of Japan. It means “cheap” or “worthless.” It used to be a cheap fish, but not anymore. The body and head are flattened laterally, and the body shape is oval. The head and eyes are large, the diameter of the eye being similar to the length of the snout. The area between the eyes is slightly concave. There are spines on the dorsal line of the head. The lower jaw is forward of the upper jaw. The posterior end of the upper jaw passes the pupil, but does not reach the posterior margin of the eye. There are small teeth on both jaws, the vomer, and the palatine bone. There are five spines on the preopercle. Two ridge lines on the upper side of the gill cover and their ends are spine-shaped.

The origin of the dorsal fin is slightly in front of the posterior tip of the gill cover. The spinous part of dorsal fin with rounded margin, and the 3rd to 5th spines are the longest. The anterior fin spines of the dorsal fin have deep notches and become shallower toward the back. The spine just before the last dorsal fin spine is much shorter than the last dorsal fin spine. The margin of the soft dorsal fin is rounded. The origin of the soft dorsal fin is slightly in front of the origin of the anal fin. The posterior of the anal fin base ends slightly in front of the posterior end of the soft dorsal fin base.

The pectoral fin is located slightly below the center of the body, and its posterior end passes the anus but does not reach the origin of the anal fin. The first soft ray on the top of the pectoral fin is unbranched, the next ten soft rays are branched, and the rest lower soft rays are unbranched. The pelvic fin is located slightly behind the base of the pectoral fin and its posterior end does not reach the anus. The margin of the caudal fin is gently concave inward in the middle. The entire head and body, including the upper jaw and snout, are covered with ctenoid scales. The number of lateral line scales is 31 to 34. The lateral line starts from the body above the top of the gill cover and curves parallel to the dorsal line and then passes horizontally through the center of peduncle.

The head and body are light red, and the belly is pale colored. There are three dark red cloud patterns on dorso-head, and three deep red cloud patterns under the spines and soft rays of the dorsal fin.  A small cloud pattern of the same color on dorso-caudal peduncle.  Large dark blotch on upper posterior gill cover. All fins are the same color as the body, and no stain or spots.

It is a benthic fish that lives in deep waters of 100-500m. It is an ovoviviparous fish, giving birth to young in the spring at a depth of 300-400m. The young eat plankton. It is delicious in winter and is used in raw fish, steamed fish, and grilled fish with seasoning. There is little research on this species, but it is popular as a food fish
