Distribution; North Pacific/southeastern Kamchatka to Navarin Canyon in the Bering Sea, Stalemate and Bowers Banks and the Aleutian Islands south to Point Conception, California, USA. Reported from southern Japan. The center of abundance appears to be Alaskan waters.
General; The Shortraker Rockfish is the largest species in the genus Sebastes and the maximum reported total length is 120 cm. The specific name borealis means "northern", an allusion which was not explained but which probably refers to the North Pacific. The English name comes from its gill rakers which have blunt, small projections.

Head spines strong to moderate. With spines on nasal, preocular, supraocular, postocular, tympanic, parietal and nuchal and may be absent on coronal. Less than 2 spines on lower orbital rim. The spines on the head may be moderately sized or large. Very large pores on lower jaw. Caudal fin moderately indented. Dorsal fin extending over most of the dorsal length.

The shortraker rockfish is pale pink, pinkish-orange or orange-red marked with blotches and saddles. Each of the fins has some black coloration and the dorsal fin may have white tips to the spines. They have a red mouth which may have black blotches. When captured their color darkens. They have large pores on their lower jaw.

Found on soft bottoms. It is searched as viviparous, but it may be ovoviviparous, so it needs to be confirmed again. The depth of discovery is 0 - 1200m. The oldest recorded Shortraker rockfish is 157 years old(2025 Fishbase information). It is the second longest-living rockfish, the first being the Rougheye rockfish(Sebastes aleutianus) with a record of 205 years. Rockfish is one of the longest-living fish in the world.

Age measurement of Shortraker rockfish
Fish age is estimated by counting growth rings in its earbone, known as an otilith, similar to tree age dating. However, the method is only accurate in temperate regions, where variances between warm and cool season growth rates create distinct ring borders. In both tropical and arctic waters it becomes very difficult to distinguish such annual variations. However, as shortraker rockfish caught off Sitka(Alaska) are regarded as coming from waters along the boundary of temperate and arctic regions annual growth rings can be slightly discernible. In 2013, Henry Liebman, a sports fisherman from Seattle, caught a 44-inch, 35-pound rockfish 10 miles off the coast of Sitka, Alaska, at a depth of 800 feet. NBC NEWS reporter Marc Lallanilla wrote an article predicting that the rockfish is 200 years old, but actually, the study found that it was 64 years old.

냉동 상태로 AFSC(Alaska Fisheries Science Center; 알래스카 수산 연구소)에 기증되었다.
The Short-raker Rockfish(Sebastes borealis) is the largest in Family Sebastidae. This Shortraker Rockfish was caught in a commercial fishing net in the Bering Sea in the winter of 2007, then frozen and donated to AFSC for research. The fish weighed in at 62 pounds and was measured at 112 centimeters (44.1 inches). After viewing the otoliths under a microscope, it was determined that the age of the fish was between 90 to 115 years old. Pictured with the famous fish are several Science Center staff.
