Lateral view of Minor rockfish(Sebastes minor) |
Oder Scorpaeniformes Family Family Sebastidae(Rockfishes, rockcods and thornyheads). Distribution; Northwest Pacific/north of the central part of the East Sea of the Korean Peninsula(Jumunjin, Sokcho, North Korea), the Pacific coast from Hokkaido to Iwate Prefecture in Japan, the west coast of Japan from Hokkaido to Aomori Prefecture, Niigata Prefecture, Toyama Prefecture, and Hamasaka in Hyogo Prefecture, from North Korea to through Peter the Great Bay in Russia, the Tartar Strait, the east coast of Sakhalin, and the southern Kuril Islands. The spine part and soft ray part of dorsal fin are connected, and their junction is concave. The last dorsal fin spine is slightly longer than the preceding one and serves to support the soft ray part. The margin of the soft rays of dorsal fin is slightly rounded. The origin of the soft ray part of the dorsal fin is located slightly anterior to the origin of the soft ray part of the anal fin. The origin of spine part of dorsal fin is just above the upper edge of the gill cover. The pectoral fin located slightly below the center of body, and posterior tip not reach the anus(cloaca). The pectoral fin has 15(rarely 16) rays. The lower seven rays and the first ray at the top of the pectoral fin are unbranched, while the remaining middle rays are branched. The posterior margin of the upper half of the pectoral fin(the branched ray area) is rounded. The posterior margin of the caudal fin is slightly rounded inward. The entire body and head(including the posterior maxilla) are covered with ctenoid scales, except for anterior area of snout. The pelvic fin origin is located somewhat farther back than the base of pectoral fin, and its posterior tip almost reaches the anus, which is located slightly behind the midbody. The posteror end of anal fin base is located in front of the posterior end of soft dorsal fin. Dead specimens are yellowish-brown overall and looks dirty. Fresh specimens have reddish orange to yellowish orange coloration throughout their bodies, darkening towards the back. The head and ventral side of the body are white or pale pinkish white. The pectoral, pelvic, and anal fins are vivid orange. The dorsal fin has irregularly distributed sesame-like dark red spots on reddish dark or ivory background, and the membrane tips of spine rays dark. The caudal fin is orange with scattered sesame-like spots. Some indistinct cloud patterns on upper side. As no underwater photos of living individual is found online, the true body color is unknown, but it is presumed that the red color is deeper underwater. Minor rockfish is a saltwater fish that found in waters shallower than 100m deep. It is ovoviviparous. In an observation, found females which developing eggs in early summer, experts explain that these females will mate with males in the fall, storing the male's sperm until about a month later, fertilizing their eggs. The eggs hatch internally, and the following spring, they give birth to fully formed larvae. The newborns immediately feed on zooplankton. Minor rockfish feeds on primarily on plankton copepods and amphipods. They are mainly caught by bottom nets. ※ The ichthyologist Vladimir Viktorovich Barsukov(1922-1989), cited in the scientific name, was an ichthyologist from the former Soviet Union(now Russia) who is famous for discovering and describing several new species of the order Scorpaeniformes(scorpionfishes). He is particularly famous for his research in which he identified a species that had been mistaken for the Sebastiscus marmoratus and caused confusion, and named it Sebastiscus tertius(Red marbled rockfish; Japanese name/Ukkari-kasago; Ukkari scorpionfish). |

This photo is the only violet-colored Sebastes minor found online, may have discolored differently than the dead individuals in the other photos, or there may be violet individual actually. There are rare instances of violet rockfish found in other sibling species. Since this photo is stored in a national research institute, it's difficult to suspect an identification error?.
