분포; 인도•서태평양/한국의 동해 남부와 제주도, 일본 남부, 남중국해, 서태평양, 오스트렐리아, 인도양, 남아프리카 남동부의 대서양 연안에 분포.
일반개요; 어렸을 때는 체고가 높고 황갈색 바탕에 7개의 경사진 검정 수직무늬가 있으며 성어가 되면 체고가 낮아지고 등쪽은 회청색 배쪽은 백색 내지 회색을 띠며 검은 띠와 반점들은 희미해지다가 나중에는 불분명해진다. 뒷지느러미 앞의 분리 극조는 1개이나 피부 속에 묻혀 있다. 주둥이는 둥글다. 위턱 뒤끝이 눈의 뒤에 이른다. 수심 20~150m 범위의 바위 지대에 산다. 무리를 짓지 아니한다. 저서성 물고기, 두족류, 새우를 먹는다. 인기 식용어이다.

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: southeastern waters and Jeju Island in Korea, southern Japan, South China Sea western Pacific, Australia, Indian Ocean, west to Atlantic waters of South Africa.
General: Young specimen yellowish brown in body color with seven black oblique bands or blotches which become indistinct and diappear with age. Body color of adult bluish grey to blackish dorsally, white to dusky below. First anal spine embedded. Maxilla reaching below rear margin of eye. Mainly in offshore reefs, on rocky bottoms. Non-schooling. Feeds on demersal fishes, cephalopods and shrimps. Excellent food fish.
