분포; 서북태평양/한국의 남해와 서해, 일본 홋카이도 이남, 타이완, 필리핀에 분포한다.
일반개요; 몸몸은 원통형이다. 등쪽은 녹색이 섞인 갈색이며 머리 쪽은 더 어둡다. 살아있을 때 체측 중앙에 언한 청색을 띤 줄 무늬가 아가미뚜껑 뒤에서부터 꼬리지느러미 기부까지 이어져 있다. 배쪽은 옅은 색을 띠지만 어두운 바닥에 쉬고 있을 때는 함께 어두워진다. 살아있을 때 배지느러미와 뒷지느러미 시작부분의 복부는 투명하다. 꼬리지느러미는 안쪽으로 약간 패였고 색은 어둡다. 제1등지느러미의 제1극조와 제3극조 사이의 기조막에 작은 점들이 찍혀 있다. 보리멸(Sillago sihama)과 혼동되기 잘한다. 청보리멸은 측선 상부의 비늘이 3~4열이며 보리멸은 5~6열이다. 연안의 모래바닥에 서식하며 모래 속으로 숨는다. 여름에 산란하며 갑각류와 작은 조개류, 지렁이를 먹는다. 향기가 좋은 식용어로 알아준다.

Distribution: Southern and western Korea, south of Hokkaido Japan, Taiwan and possibly the Philippines.
General: Body crosssection round. Greenish gray above, the dorsal part of the head darker. Ventrally pale, but darker when rest on dark bottoms. A bluish lateral stripe on the side of central body when alive. Origins of pelvic and anal fins colorless, transparent when alive. The membrane between the first to the third dorsal fin spines with minute dark brown spots. Caudal fin dark in color. Commonly misidentified as Sillago sihama, different in number of scales above lateral lines. Occur on shallow sandy flats. Spawn in summer. Burrows into sand. Feeds on crustaceans, worms and small clams. Esteemed for its delicate flavor.
