분포; 인도•서태평양/한국의 서해와 남해, 일본, 타이완, 필리핀에서부터 남아프리카와 오스트레일리아에 이르는 인도양, 및 홍해와 지중해의 터키에 분포한다.
일반개요; 다른 여러 유사종과 혼동되고 있다. 몸은 원통형이다. 측선 상부 비늘 수는 5~6열이다. 몸은 연한 갈색이며 배쪽은 희지만 살아있을 때 배지느러미와 뒷지느러미의 앞부분은 노란색을 띤다. 제2등지느러미에 희미한 어두운 점들이 여러 줄 배열되어 있다. 제1등지느러미에도 점들이 없는 것 같으나 희미한 점들이 있다. 연안이나 하구의 기수 모래 바닥에서 갑각류를 잡아먹고 산다. 무리를 짓는다. 모래 속으로 숨는다. 난생이다.

Distribution: Southern & western Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, west to South Africa, Red Sea and Mediterranean(Turkey), south to Australia. Often misidentified as other similar species.
General: Body cross section round. 5~6 scales above lateral line. Light gray brown dorsally, pale ventrally, origin of pelvic and anal fins yellow when alive. 2nd dorsal fin with some rows of indistinct dark dots, also indistinct faint dots on 1st dorsal fin. Common along beaches and sandbars and sand bottoms in estuaries. Form schools. Bury themselves in the sand when disturbed. Feed mainly on crustaceans. Oviparous.
