분포; 서대서양: 멕시코 만, 브라질, 아르헨티나. 동대서양: 포루투갈, 나미비아. 인도•태평양: 남아프리카, 오스트렐리아, 뉴질랜드, 일본. 동남부 태평양.
일반개요; 주둥이가 짧은 편이다. 몸은 흑갈색이며 배지느러미 위와 앞 및 뒤로 자리를 잡은 경계선이 불분명한 흑색 마크가 있다. 꼬리지느러미 하엽 앞에도 검은 마크가 있다. 피부치는 절두형(truncated)이며 불규칙적으로 배열되었다. 수면 가깝게 나타나기도 하지만 200~1,000m 깊은 수심 대륙붕 바닥 쪽에서 서식한다. 물고기 알, 샛비늘치(lanternfish), 오징어, 다른 랜턴샤크를 잡아먹는다. 난태생. 식용으로 이용된다.

Distribution: Western Atlantic: Gulf of Mexico, Brazil to Argentina. eastern Atlantic: Portugal to Namibia. Indo-Pacific: South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Southeast Pacific.
General: With relatively short snout, low, truncated denticles. Denticles not arranged in rows. Blackish brown dorsally, with an obscure broad mark running above, in front of and behind pelvic fins. Found on or near the bottoms of continental slopes from 200 to 1000m depths, also occurs in ocean waters between Argentina and South Africa. Feeds on fish eggs, lanternfish, squid, and other small dogfish. Ovoviviparous. Utilized for human consumption.
