분포; 인도•서태평양: 한국의 남해, 일본 남부, 중국, 오스트렐리아, 홍해, 인도양에 분포.
일반개요; 몸은 회청색 바탕이며 각 비늘마다 중앙에 있는 황색 내지 회황색 반점들이 이어져 있는 것처럼 보여 여러 개의 선무늬로 나타난다. 배지느러미와 뒷지느러미는 노랗다. 주둥이 가장자리가 약간 볼록하다. 세계적으로는 최대 80cm(TL) 기록이 있다. 연안에 서식하며 기수에도 들어간다. 무리를 지을 때가 많다. 패류같은 저서 무척추동물을 주식한다. 정상적으로는 암수딴몸(Gonochorism)이지만 지역에 따라 어떤 개체는 웅성선숙(雄性先熟)의 암수한몸이다. 오스트레일리아에서는 암수딴몸이며 아시아에서는 암수한몸(雄性先熟; protandry)으로 확인되었다.

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific/South Sea of Korea, southern Japan, China, Australia, Red Sea and Indian Ocean.
General; Greyish blue upper body, pale below in ground color. Greyish yellow or light yellow spot on each center of the scale which form about 20 lateral lines. Pelvic and anal fins bright yellow. Snout dorsal margin somewhat rounded. Max size of the world 80cm(TL). Inhabits coastal waters, usually entering estuaries. Often in schools. Feeds on benthic invertebrates, mainly mollusks and aquatic macrophytes. Normally sexes are separate but some individuals are protandrous due to geographical variation in sexual pattern. Gonochorism is confirmed in Australia, and protandry in Asia
