Distribution; Northwest Pacific/southeastern Hokkaido, Japan. Endemic species.
General; The fish is said to resemble a willow leaf, and its Japanese name reflects this; shishamo, is derived from the Ainu name for the same fish, susam, which is supposed to be derived from a compound of Ainu susu "willow" + ham "leaf", hence its name in Chinese characters(柳葉魚 jukujikun, where the characters have no phonetic relation to the word). An anadromous fish(smelt) native to Hokkaido, Japan. This fish averages 15 centimeters in length, with a maximum recorded length of 70 cm. It is generally dark on the back with a silver-white underside

Anadromous. Move into river in winter for spawning. Lay eggs onto gravel bottoms of the river where the velocity of water flow is less than 0.6 m/sec. eggs are Average batch of eggs per a female about 8,000. Eggs are adhesive and attach onto substrate. After spawn, they die, but some female survive and can spawn next season. The reported spawning grounds are the 9 streams in west and 7 streams in east of Cape Erimo in Hokkaido Island. The hatchlings move to salt water near river mouth in depth of 4-5m. Grow to adulthood in one and half year. Adults stay in deep water offshore and migrate into rivers for spawning. Nuptial color of males blackish, but females do not change in coloration

Shishamo smelt(Spirinchus lanceolatus) is frequently confused with Capelin(Mallotus villosus). These 2 species are members of family Osmeridae(Smelts), but different in genus and species name, the latter species is called as “Karafuto-shishamo” in Japanese common name. This common name can be translated into English as “pseudo-shishamo”. Roe of real shishamo smelt(Spirinchus lanceolatus) is a high-value product and in short supply, thus a lot of restaurant owners sold the fake low priced shishamo as the real. Many Japanese cosummers do not have the ability to distinguish the differences. Often, roe of Capelin(masago; Mallotus villosus) is used as a substitute for flying fish roe, owing to its similar appearance and taste —although the mouthfeel is different due to the individual eggs being smaller and less crunchy than flying fish roe. In Japanese cuisine, Shishamo smelt is grilled or fried whole and served with its roe intact. Due to declining catches in recent years, attempts have been made to commercially farm the fish in Japan.
