Order Cypriniformes Family Cyprinidae(Minnows or carps) Subfamily Gobioninae
(Korean slender gudgeon)
Squalidus gracilis majimae(Joran and Hubbs). 10 cm TL
Korean name/gin-mol-gae(긴몰개)
Dorsal spines 3, Dorsal soft rays 7. Anal spines 3, Anal soft rays 6. LL/33-35. Vert/30. Gill raker/4-6.

Korean slender gudgeon
Squalidus gracilis majimae(Joran and Hubbs). 10 cm TL
Korean name/gin-mol-gae(긴몰개)
Dorsal spines 3, Dorsal soft rays 7. Anal spines 3, Anal soft rays 6. LL/33-35. Vert/30. Gill raker/4-6. 옆줄위비늘수(scales above lateral line; TRa)/3.5.

Distribution; Asia/Endemic to Korea. Found in streams flow to west, south and south eastern coasts. Also distribute in north Korea.
General; Body elongated, oval shape in cross section and compressed posteriorly. Other Squalidus species such as Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae and Squalidus japonicus coreanus have a bulging belly, but this fish(Squalidus gracilis majimae) has slim belly. Eye relatively large, placed slightly ahead of head center and close to dorso-head. Snout tip pointed, lower jaw slightly shorter than upper jaw. Mouth located below snout. A pair of very thin barbels with a length of almost equal to eye diameter. Mouth that open downwards makes it easy to pick up food from bottom. Gill rakers short and rudimentary.

Dorsal fin begins from slightly ahead of pelvic fin origin, and with slightly concaved margin. Anal fin’s shape similar to dorsal fin, but smaller. Caudal fin deeply emarginated and both lobes almost symmetrical in shape and size. Scales relatively large, scales in dorsal area distinctly large. Lateral line complete and run straight through full length. Pectoral fin short.

Dorsal side with pale darkish gray brown, silvery white ventrally. A broad lateral stripe embedded beneath the skin, this stripe run parallel with lateral line just below it. Dots of lateral line distinct in young specimens. No pattern in fins.

Inhabit slow streams or lakes with weeds. School and swim in surface to mid depth level. Feed on aquatic insects and small crustaceans. Spawn in May to June, attach eggs onto weed. Hatchlings grow 40mm in single year, 80mm after 3 years. Utilized for human food and aquarium fish.
