잉어과는 규모가 매우 크고 종류가 아주 다양한 집단이어서 분류학적으로 마무리 정리를 못하는 분야이며 아과의 분류도 일치된 동의를 받지 못하는 일이 많다. 어떤 학자들은 위의 5속을 다른 규모가 큰 아과에 포함시켜야 한다고 주장한다. 그러나 위 5속은 유전학적, 형태학적 연구에서 Xenocyprinae(대두어아과)로 분류하는 것이 옳다는 결론이 나와있다. 대두어아과(Xenocyprinae) 종들은 동아시아가 원산지인 물고기이다. 다음 5속이 있다.

• Distoechodon(Peters, 1881)
• Hypophthalmichthys(Bleeker, 1860)
• Plagiognathops(Berg, 1907)
• Pseudobrama(Bleeker, 1870)
• Xenocypris(Günther, 1868)

한국에는 다음 대두어 속(Hypophthalmichthys) 2종 만이 알려져 있다.
• 백련어(Silver carp). Hypophthalmichthys molitrix(Valenciennes, 1844).
• 대두어(Bighead carp). Hypophthalmichthys nobilis(Richardson, 1845).

Subfamily Xenocyprinae(Bighead carp, Silver carp)
Cyprinidae is a large, widespread and diverse family of, mainly, freshwater ray-finned fish and the taxonomy of the family has not yet been fully resolved and the subfamilies do not appear to have a single accepted taxonomy. Some authorities place the genera above in the larger subfamilies Oxygasterinae or Xenocypridinae. However, genetic and morphological studies have supported the view that the five general currently assigned to the subfamily Xenocyprinae form a monophyletic grouping. Xenocyprinae is originally from eastern Asia. The following 5 genera are assigned to the subfamily Xenocyprinae on Fishbase.
