Distribution; Northwest Pacific/southern Japan and East China Sea to Taiwan.

Body length 2.7-2.9 times head length;  Head depressed, head length 3.2-3.6 times as long as snout. Interorbital space slightly broad. Snout depressed and short, 1.1-1.5 times eye diameter. Mouth large, upper jaw extending posteriorly beyond anterior margin of eye. Eyes large, without depression behind eyes. Vomer teeth in two clusters.

Lateral canals not present on the pectoral region. No skin flap above the eyes. No skin flap on the interopercle. Cheeks with double ridges. Subocular ridge with 7-9 spines. Preoperculum with 3 spines above, the upper spine is the longest and the lower one does not have a forward inverted spine. Preorbital with 0 or 1 spine. Supraorbital with 1-2 spines. A single flap on the lower edge of gill cover. Lateral line scales with a single opening.

Head and body brown or grayish black, lower half white. Dorsum with unidentified saddle spots. Hind half of fist dorsal fin(spine part) black, remaining area grayish with occasional spots or stripes formed by spots. Each rays of second dorsal fin has dots spaced at regular intervals.
