일반개요; 쑤기미과의 영명은 Stonefish(돌고기)이다.

Distribution; Indo-Pacific/Red Sea and East Africa to French Polynesia, north to the Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to Queensland, Australia.
General; Species stonefish(Synanceia verrucosa) is sometimes called as “reef stonefish” to avoid confusion with the general name of stonefishes(Family Synanceiidae). It is the most widespread species of stonefish, mostly found in shallow tropical waters above the Tropic of Capricorn. There is also evidence showing that S. verrucosa occurs in the far eastern Mediterranean Sea, either through release of aquarium specimens or Lessepsian migration via the Suez Canal.

The body is stocky and fusiform towards the tail. The head, wide with short and flattened profile, carries on top two small protruding eyes, spaced by a depression, standing over the head. The huge pectoral fins, with 17-19 solid rays, wrap almost all the body and supports the body as it catches prey. It has a mouth and stomach large enough to swallow prey larger than itself. This fish lives in coral reefs. It may settle on sand bottoms and around rocks and plants.

It is the deadliest fish in the sea, with incredibly effective venom which can be lethal to humans. The reef stonefish eats mostly small fish, shrimp and other crustaceans. It captures prey by sitting motionless on the reef floor and waiting for animals to swim by. The stonefish will then engulf its prey, doing so at incredible speeds. Some stonefish have been recorded striking their prey in .015 seconds.

The colours are changeable and very different depending on the habitat. There is black, grey, green, magenta, red, orange, pink and yellow. Their skin is rocky and uneven, which helps them hide and remain camouflaged in between rocks and corals. Furthermore, it secretes sticky mucus which seizes fragments of corals and seaweeds thus granting a classy touch to the already perfect mimetic livery. The primary commercial significance of this stonefish is as an aquarium pet. It is also sold for meat in Hong Kong markets. It is consumed in the Philippines, especially in Chinese restaurants, and in Japan.

Reproduction; The reef stonefish lives most of its life as a solitary animal, and during mating season only aggregates with the opposite sex for a short time. When a female stonefish has reached sexual maturity, she will lay her unfertilized eggs on the floor of the reef. A male will then swim by and release sperm onto the layer of eggs, fertilizing them. Stonefish eggs are fairly large, with young fish hatching well developed. Larvae are pelagic. The mating system of the reef stonefish is promiscuity, as the female will not discriminate between which males can lay their sperm on the egg layer. Sexual dimorphism is apparent in reef stonefish, with females being larger than males.

Toxicity; The stonefish is the most venomous fish in the world. Its dorsal area is lined with 13 spines, each of which has two venom sacs. The spines are sharp and stiff and have been known to pierce boot soles. The spines hided in fleshy protuberances(sheaths) and almost always bent, thus the spines are not visible from outside. Stonefish venom can be fatal at a dose of only 18mg, which the fish is capable of releasing with only six of its thirteen spines. The protein makeup differs between the other species of stonefish, but in reef stonefish the fatal protein is the verrucotoxin protein. Its composition is much similar to that of the cobra, The venom consists of a mixture of proteins, including the hemolytic stonustoxin, the proteinaceous verrucotoxin, and the cardiotoxic cardioleputin.

Effects of the venom include severe pain, shock, paralysis, and tissue death. A large dose can be fatal to humans, generally young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Medical treatment includes the antivenom. A serum exists which is effective if applied immediately after the infliction. A local anesthetic can reduce the pain. First aid includes immersion of the affected limb in hot water; this is thought to help denature the proteins in the venom. The immobilization of venom at penetration site using a tourniquet or firm constrictive bandaging is no longer recommended. Surviving victims may have nerve damage, which can lead to local muscle atrophy.

Author of video/Dr Glenn Moore; Curator and ichthyologist of Fishes at the Western Australian Museum.

In this video, Dr. Glenn Moore, ichthyologist at the Western Australian Museum, explains how stone fishes adapt to survival, how to develop camouflaging and the dangerous stings. In this video, the stone fish remain in very shallow tidal pool after low tide and disguised, making it clear that a person can be attacked while walking. I introduce following 3 scenes from the video.

Dr. Glenn Moore found a stone fish in the tidal pool and leans against a rock to explain. He holds a tweezer in his right hand.
