Distribution; Indo-West Pacific/southern Korea, Pacific coasts of Japan, Taiwan, East and South China Sea, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, Andaman Sea, India, Persian gulf, Red Sea,
General; Body subcylindrical, head slihgtly depressed. The eyes are large and set on dorso-top. The mouth is very large, and the rear end of the upper jaw passes the rear edge of the eye. Snout short and tip pointed. Upper and lower jaws equal in length. Both jaws have one row of needle-shaped teeth. The palatine and tongue also have teeth. The length of anteriormost palatine teeth similar to posterior teeth and not in a discrete distinct group. When viewed from ventral side, the left and right gill membranes are separated from the isthmus(the part between the left and right gills in the middle of the chest and throat).

Head and body with cycloid scales; cheek behind mouth scaled; scales above lateral line 3.5, below 5. Has one dorsal fin, dorsal fin about midway on back. The inner edge of the pelvic fin is longer than the outer one. The pelvic fin has 8 soft rays, of which the 6th ray is the longest.  Pectoral fins extending to or beyond the line from pelvic-fin origin to dorsal-fin origin; caudal fin forked. One adipose fin on the tail near the caudal fin.

Most lizardfish have almost identical patterns when they are alive, so it is difficult to distinguish between Synodus species. The big difference is that the scale arrangement line of Synodus macrops is different from other related species. What I discovered after observing the underwater photos of Synodus macrops living in a natural state is that the arrangement of scales of Synodus macrops is different from that of other related species. In other related species, the directions of up and down scale rows are inclined and the lateral(horizontal) scale lines are emphasized with color, whereas the scales of Synodus macrops are rather vertical in the top-down direction, and the color trend is also highlighted on vertical columns.

The dorsal side of the body is light brown or dark brown depending on the environment and white below the lateral line. With about 9 dark patterns on body side that look like Y-shaped pillars are erected on the cornerstone, and dark pattern and pale indistinct pattern are arranged alternately. This pattern is almost identical to that of other congeners(genus Synodus). In the texts of other literatures describing this species as, "There are 3 to 5 X- or Y-shaped black patterns along the lateral line of the center of the body." It is clear that the expression of the pattern shape and number in this text are explained based on a dead specimen with some patterns missing. The English name “Triple-cross lizardfish” is also obviously a name derived from the faded pattern of dead specimen. The background color of the fins is light, and there are several black spots on each fin rays. There are no dark blotches behind the eyes when alive.

The triplecross lizardfish can be found in coastal sand flats to deep off-shore within a demersal depth range of about 35–200m(110–660ft), but prefers deeper waters. It is used as a source of food. It is commonly caught and sold fresh or dried salted in markets. Feed on mostly on small fish, followed by squid, shrimp. The spawning season is from May to August. Most of the catches are bycatch by low-level trawling, but the catches are small. The Korean name “su-da_kkot-dong-myeol(수다꽃동멸)” is derived from Japanese name(チョウチョウエソ) and can be translated into English as “bigmouth(chattering) lizardfish”. The name seems to have been given because of its very large mouth, which suggests that it is easy to chatter.

The dorsal side of the body is light brown and bright below the lateral line, and 3~5 dark blotches in shape of X or Y along the lateral line in the center of the body. The fins are colorless and transparent. No blotch behind the eyes when alive The maximum recorded length of the Triplecross lizardfish as an unsexed male is about 20cm(7.9 in). The common length of this species as an unsexed male is around 10 cm(3.9 in). It is used as a source of food. It is commonly caught and sold fresh or dried salted in markets. Feed on mostly on small fish, followed by squid, shrimp. The spawning season is from May to August. Most of the catches are bycatch by low-level trawling, but the catches are small.
