Lateral view of Slender ribbonfish(Trachipterus ishikawae) |

No scales on body surface and instead covered with round processes. with small, sharp projections along the ventral side from the lower part of the head to the front of the caudal fin. Small spines in one row along the lateral line up to base of caudal fin. Bladder absent or underdeveloped. Anus is located in the center of the body, The body is silvery white, no blotches, spots or color patterns. The belly part from posterior head to anus is pale dark colored. Trachipteridae fishes have completely different body shape between adults and juveniles, and it is often found that the descriptions that judged the species by appearance of the adult fish is in error. The illustration on the left shows the head of Slender ribbonfish(Trachipterus ishikawae) whose front margin of head is characterized by gentle slope compared to other species. The illustration on the right is the head of Mediterranean dealfish(Trachipterus trachypterus) and the inclination of front margin of head is very steep, so you can clearly see the difference between the two |
Slender ribbonfish(Trachipterus ishikawae) protrudes its mouth when it preys. The illustration on the left is when the mouth and snout are in normal position, and the right is when this zone extended forward. It seems not stretched to maximum length, estimated about 80% stretching. |

Although the description of the photo says it is Trachipterus ishikawae, it is highly probable that it is a different species due to the steep slope of the front of its head. 사진의 모델은 투라치와 같은 속의 다른 종인 Trachipterus altivelis(King-of-the-salmon)이다. Picture for reference/snout appearance of genus Trachipterus. The snout is like a pig's nose, but this is because the mouth protruded far forward. Fish model of the picture is Trachipterus altivelis(King-of-the-salmon). Author/NOAA/NMFS(미해양대기국 산하 미국수산청) |
