분포; 서태평양/한국의 동해, 남해, 제주도, 일본, 뉴질랜드. 남동부태평양/칠레. 동대서양/서지중해와 모로코에서 나미비아까지 및 남아프리카의 테이블 베이.
일반개요; 몸은 길고 옆으로 납작하다. 체고는 머리 바로 뒤에서 가장 높다. 몸의 횡축은 꼬리부분에서 위쪽으로 휘어진다. 머리는 앞이 심하게 경사져 있어 뭉툭하고 길이는 짧다. 입은 작으며 앞으로 튀어나갈 수 있는 구조이다. 눈이 크다. 몸에 비늘이 없다. 등지느러미는 1개로 길며 머리 전반부에서 시작하여 꼬리지느러미 기저까지 이어져 있다. 등지느러미는 1개로 길며 머리 전반부에서 시작하여 꼬리지느러미 기저까지 이어져 있다. 등지느러미 연조 수는 145-185개인데 맨 앞 기조 몇 개가 길게 연장되어 있어서 등지느러미가 2개인 것처럼 보인다. 성어들은 이 긴 부분이 손상되어 있는 경우가 많다. 뒷지느러미는 없다. 가슴지느러미는 작으며 수평으로 놓인다. 배지느러미는 어렸을 때는 길고 성어는 짧다. 꼬리지느러미는 부채꼴이며 거의 수직으로 세워져 있다.  측선은 아가미뚜껑 위 가장자리에서부터 꼬리까지 직선으로 이어진다. 

몸색은 은백색인데 머리 앞부분, 양 눈 사이, 위턱의 윗부분, 아래턱의 앞 끝 부분은 검다. 보통 몸에 동그란 검은 반점이 있는데 측선의 위쪽 몸에 1개 내지 4개의 검은 반점이 있을 때가 있고 복부에는 1개 내지 2개의 검은 반점이 있을 수 있다. 등지느러미, 가슴지느러미, 배지느러미는 붉은 색이다. 수심 500m의 중심해층에 사는 희귀하게 발견되는 물고기이다. 작은 물고기와 오징어를 잡아먹는다. 머리를 위로 세우고 수직으로 서서 헤엄친다. 알과 치자어가 수면 가까이에서 발견되는 일이 많다. 

※ 꼬리투라치는 2000년에 한국 분포종으로 보고되기는 했으나 근거가 불분명하다는 주장이 있다.

Distribution; Western Pacific/southeastern sea, south sea, and Jeju Iland of Korea. Japan and New Zealand. Southeast Pacific/ Chile. Eastern Atlantic/western Mediterranean and from Morocco to Namibia; also off Table Bay, South Africa.
General; Body elongate, compressed, greatest depth immediately behind head. Body axis curved upward in the caudal region. Head steeply slanted, blunt and short, mouth small, protrusible. Eyes large. Body without scales. No anal fin; pectoral fins small, inserted horizontally. Pelvic fins elongate in young, small in adults. Caudal fin fan-like and stand perpendicular to the body axis. perpendicular to body axis.  Lateral line straight from above posterior margin of gill opening to tail. Has a long dorsal fin that is continuing from anterior head to the caudal fin base. Dorsal fin with 145-185 rays, the first few rays elongate as if has two dorsal fins, these elongated rays often damaged in adults.

Silvery in body color except for front of head, interorbital area, dorsal part of upper jaw, and tip of lower jaw which are black. Dorsal, pectoral and pelvic fins are red-colored. Usually has round black blotch on the body, sometimes with 1 to 4 black blotch on the upper body of the lateral line, and 1 or 2 black blotch on belly side. A rare, mesopelagic species down to 500m. Feeds on squid and midwater fishes. Swims with head up. Eggs and larvae are found frequently near the surface.. ※ it was reported as a species distributing in Korea in 2000, but there is an argument that the evidence is unclear.
