대황어(Pacific redfin)
Tribolodon brandtii(Dybowski, 1872). 55 cm TL
Korean name/dae-hwang-eo(대황어)
Japanese name/ma-ru-ta-u-gu-i(マルタウグイ/마루타우구이)

황어와 대황어의 차이;

Tribolodon-hakonensis_Tribolodon-brandtii_2drawings.jpg

Juveniles born in freshwater migrate to sea water, stay most of their life time in sea water, ascend streams in spawning season. Spawn in April to May, spawning activity done in groups of single female and multiple males. Attach eggs onto gravels. Hatchlings migrate to sea when reached 4-6 cm. The difference between Big-scaled redfin(Tribolodon hakonensis) and Pacific redfin(Tribolodon brandtii).

Tribolodon-hakonensis_Tribolodon-brandtii_2drawings.jpg
Both species appear in streams and inshore waters in same season, and two species almost impossible to distinguish. Only distinguishable when they get nuptial color. Their body color turn black with reddish yellow lateral stripe. Big-scaled redfin gets 2 reddish yellow stripes, whereas Pacific redfin shows single reddish yellow stripe on ventral side. Other characteristics; scale numbers less than 37 in Big-scaled redfin, more than 40 in Pacific redfin. Anatomical characteristics; preoperculo mandibular canal is separate from post ocular commissure in Big-scaled redfin, continuous in Pacific redfin.
